OK people with much more experience with this vehicle than I... what causes this thing to burn oil under heavy throttle? It even sometimes farts out a big cloud when I let off after heavy throttle.
So far my bets are the turbo and something in the PCV system, because both are going to do something transient with vacuum is removed/is reapplied.
Ideas?
Thanks

Turbo and PCV are where I would start.
Here's IPD's flame trap parts:

I'm about to do the PCV relocation on my 745, and I have a (another) new turbo for it. I'm consuming heavy amounts of oil, too. And coolant, now that I think about it. And power steering fluid. And it leaks fuel.
I love my bricky turbo wagon, though! :)

OK, what the heck does the pcv system on this thing do? I haven't found a good diagram...
Ack! My baby!
No worries my new one does it too at comparable mileage, tho mine blows it out the valve cover more.
Likely needs a new breather box and PCV hoses. Got mine at eeuroparts . You'll want to curse me a bit when you do that box, its a bugger to get to the first time.
Before you even do that take the drain out of the intercooler and see how much oil comes out (use a drain pan). Any more than a teaspoon and the turbo has sealing isssues. Check the shaft play, then start looking for that 16g upgrade.

JD,
From what little I know, it seems that it pretty much means pulling the intake, right?
If you want to get right after everything, pull the intake. Its not a huge job, and its not unusual for the intake gaskets to split, so two birds, one stone. When you get the breather box off, don't try to dig out what may appear to be a second oring on the smaller hole- it is a tube that goes down into the oil pan. The rest of the job is dead simple.
Oh yeah- have a look at the wires under the manifold- they are famous for losing insulation, so you can repair that too- three birds, one stone.l
Nope. You can get in there. Keep the wife and kids out of earshot though. And if you didn't already, you'll make this car yours with blood before you're done. Be sure to get ALL the parts the first time-guess how I know. Then again once you do this job one time the 2nd and 3rd times are a breeze.

except you say no intake manifold - really? I am surprised - because it's four bucks. Confirm that and the list for me? Anything else I should get?
Going by the picture you want 1,2,4,5,6, and 9. Spring for a few feet of vacuum hose too and do that while you're there. I think I did most of them previously but for $5 its nice to have on hand. Doing the intake isn't a bad idea but will add some time in exchange for keeping your fingers intact.
Do check the intercooler too. I was floored by the 1/2 quart that came out of mine.

Gotcha.
Thanks for the help, guys.
By the way, JD, I won't be cursing you, this car is great. Not the fastest car I've owned (yet) but it sure is the most comfy, and it certainly isn't slow.
After all of this, if I still have burning oil, I guess I need to check out the turbo oil return line and get that big turbo out of the yard that I've been bugging my wife about, eh?

You should not have a flame trap on a 4 banger Volvo turbo. The turbo acts as a flame trap. The piping is there, but it should not have an insert. People put the insert in, it clogs, the turbo seals fail and the exhaust turns into "Bond, James Bond" smoke screen.

Well that wasn't hard, and got rid of the burning. I left the manifold on, because there was a lot of crap attached to it. Sound that the old canister thing was pretty grody plus there was a very questionable splice in the big vacuum line that was essentially a smaller vacuum line clamped in, and I found that the big T has a big hole in it where it looks like it had been melted and glued.
Now off to fix the funky idle!
Sweet! I was hoping the idle would fix itself when you fixed the oil problem.
