So the official pricing has been announced for the 2013 Ford GT500, and it's even less than predicted: it starts from $54,200 (plus destination). That’s for a car with a factory warranty that makes 650 horsepower and is capable of hitting over 200 mph. Yeah.

And cue the dealer markups...
Seriously man, what the heck is Porsche, Ferrari, etc going to do about this? Muscle cars have always been able to hang with Supercars here and there, but this is a smackdown on a whole new level.
GT500 Hardtop + SVT Performance Pack = Giant Killer!
(What's a GT-R go for, anyways?)

some things just mock themselves, so there is no need for a trendy internet running joke about it.

A used C6 Z06 will go 198 for 15 grand less, it's lighter, it handles better.
Supercars were on notice when the z06 came out a decade ago.
In reply to AutoXR:
Please show me a C6 Z06 for under $40k. Then show me a new one for that. That is, after all, what the Mustang is.

Impressive to say the least. I can't wait til they're used and affordable.
I foresee many of these being crashed at great speed.
Huge bravo to Ford for this.
Now can we pretty please have a Focus RS? There was always the chatter that the RS and the Mustang would have too much overlap in performance and it would degrade the Mustang's image somehow. Well, now you can give us the RS.

Does this one have a real suspension so it can turn?

Really? A live axle can work just fine.
The V-6 Performance Package Mustang I test-drove handled just fine. It handles a helluva lot better than a Camaro with a "real suspension."

I would like to do 200mph.. once. I think the Focus RS would be more fun as it would be a more usable fun
where exactly would one go 200mph in the USA anyhow, other than the salt flats?

Texas Mile, Maxton (nee - Ohio now), Muroc, Bonneville, Silver State Challenge, the Spectre 421, etc, etc. We actually have quite a lot of choices in competition venue.

You can get a Gen 3 viper in the mid 30's now that would eat your corvette. Always something used cheaper.
But for a brand new car off the lot that is majorly impressive given the cost.

A Gen 3 Viper would have a hard time with a C5 Z06, let alone a C6 Z06.

I've driven a GT500, and if it's anything like that then yes, it's a thrill in a straight line, and once you got to a corner you felt all 4000#'s. For the .00000001% of the population that will actually go 200mph in this car Im sure it's a great deal. Anyone serious about performance will wait for the SVO or buy a base 5.0l. I can tell you at our lapping sessions I had NO issue with GT500's in my bone stock base 05 GT (3380#) running $1600 in Sam strano parts.. I would hate to try and wrangle that 4000# monster through an autocross... More power it's just going to make it less of a drivers car and more of an un-balanced brute.
I bet if you look @ lap times a C5 z06 is just as fast around a track..
my 2 cents based on daily driving winter and summer an 05GT. Even the light ones are heavy brutes.
In reply to AutoXR:
Pssst - the new GT500 is an aluminum block and some 150-200Lbs lighter according to the advertising. (Not that I don't agree with you, because I do)
hmm.. wait till somebody wrecks their GT500 and swap the engine into a 5.0GT?
I see the 2011 Z06 MOTORTREND tested would sell for like $105k.
Just watched a GT500 vs. Z06 vs. GTR. The Mustang was over $20,000 cheaper than the Z06.
I'll take my chances with the 'Stang and keep the $20k in my pocket.

Funny that noone else responded to that. I liked it..
