I have a coworker who has a 2001 beetle with a 1.8t/5sp. It only has 92k-ish miles and doesnt run because of a coil pack. She wants to sell the car to a junker because(when they lived in FL a few yrs ago the sunroof leaked and the car interior grew mold/which she immediately cleaned and kept driving) and it doesnt run. She was going to have her husband (who is mechanically inclined) fix it and let their teen daughter drive it but she doesnt think the whole mold incident from 3 years ago is healthy for people to keep driving. She is under the impression that no one would buy it and its too unhealthy for her daughter because of that mold incident. In my opinion if the mold was cleaned and its been gone for years then keep driving it, but she doesnt agree. So I told her if you dont want to sell to someone who is willing to drive it then part it out and make more money than a junker would give you. She wants to about know how much $ would she get from parting out such car.

My question to you guys: Using your guesstimation skills how much do you think she could make in the long run from parting out the beetle. 2001 1.8t stick shift and 92k-ish miles.

if she is not adept at sorting a coil, she has no business parting out a car.

Sell it whole.

No her husband can part it out or fix it. She, just thinks its no point in fixing the coil because she deems the car un-healthy. Btw she was prior 'Public Health' so she is a stickler on mold and the sorts.

Sounds like she has already made the decision that her conscious is telling her to do. Just let it die in the junkyard unless you want to take it on yourself.

Assuming free labor to remove and clean and list and deal with flaky buyers, 2500 or so should be doable fairly easily. I got about $2000 out of the Neon SRT4 I parted, keeping the engine, transmission and some other goodies. It was wrecked too, meaning some body parts were not able to be sold.

Given the cheapest Jetta I'm seeing on Autotrader right now is about $4000 (that happen to meet my rather restrictive search settings - long story), I'd say she's throwing money away.

Depending on how well you get along with her and/or how often you see each other; IMHO : buy the car from her, fix the coil pack, clean it up a bit = PROFIT.

It is quite possible that the coil packs will be replaced free under recall. My 3rd hand 2001 1.8t gti got them in 2011. Call the dealer and give them the VIN and they will tell you if it is eligible.

I have too much to take on already. I'm not taking it. I was just trying to give her a better option than junking it. Her husband is a stay at home dad. He could take it apart. I just don't think she understand the way parting out works.

Is it anywhere near Atlanta? I know someone who would be interested in it. Parting is not the problem. Getting stuff sold is.

E36 M3. I have a box of about 30 used good coils. And that's only because I threw 30 of them away recently. I think last count VAG was on recall number 17 of ignition coils. They (Bremi and Bosch) just can't figure out how to make a coil last longer then the oil change interval.

Ah F it. Her husband is being lazy. Told me to come get it for $500. Nope!

I too had to carry a spare or two with the car but the 2011 recall was the last time I had to change one.

Once they got that sorted the car was totally troublefree.

Take it.

For $500, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But you are 3000 miles away.

If you don't have time to fool with it, hire someone who does, and split the money with them.
