Friend of mine has an '01 Mitsubishi Montero. They had a 3.5 200hp V6 in all of these of this era. It's broke. Spun bearing/rod knock, etc. Not his, but looks like this:
Short of finding a junkyard replacement factory lump and swapping it, any ideas or successful conversions done?
Any Mitsu gurus familiar with trans/platform/bellhousing options?
4bt diesel? 4G63? ha.

bah, quick google pic steal fail.
His is not a sport. It does have the 3.5. I'll steal a different pic.

I'm no Mitsu guy, but a crapton of MoPar minivans had Mitsu 3.0 V-6s and the transmissions all died, so I bet there's a ton of fine engines in the junkyard. Will that swap work? No stinkin' clue!
DOHC twin-turbo 3.0V6 from the Stealth/3000GT FTW!
Seriously though the 3.5 used in that rig should be derived from the lowly 3.0 used in the early Mitsu/Chrysler cars and was available up to 3.8L I believe in the larger Mitsu trucks. So a quick "swap" might be to find a larger displacement motor to slot in where the wee baby one was originally.
It would be a bit difficult getting the parts, but a 4D56 from a Diesel Pajero should drop right in. The engine could come from a Delica, which are getting somewhat popular as imports in Canada, but I imagine Pajero/Montero mounts are different. Also, no clue if the trans you have would work or if you'd have to get one off a diesel Pajero.
The Delicas were the same mechanically as the Gen 2 and Gen 2.5 Monteros so you may get lucky with that diesel fitting.
You could also look for the 3.8L motor, I think that came in later models of the 3rd gens like your buddy has.
It a 6G7X motor family so all of those motors should be pretty much drop in. I would look at the 6G75 out of the eclipse for a little more go power.

Kind of funny that people are talking about older, smaller motors.
If i was in that position i'd probably look at a newer mivec 3.8L out of a wrecked 4g eclipse. Like any 24v 6g mitsu v6 it's been boosted up over 1000 hp if you care for that.
If you don't care for that at least it will be SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than stock. It would probably make a bit over 300hp with simple mods and tuning and get basically the same MPG as stock without all the work of swapping to a totally different engine family.
ahhh, that is a completely different beast.
Why not import a JDM diesel conversion.
I have the 2003 which has the 3.8 these came with which guys actually do swap into eclipses

3.8 non-mivec would be very straightforward but not a huge power/torque gain. Having said that it's probably the thing i'd do if i just wanted it to run.
