It seems they really can be had for small money. I ran into a guy at an auto-x in the Summer of 2009 that picked up one in nicer condition for $3K.

Doesn't look too bad but probably more than you can handle with a piece of dry ice and a hair dryer...

I paid $7k for one with 20K miles and about $4-5k in mods. Dirt cheap cars for what you get. I recently put the Spec Focus suspension on mine and it feels like an M3 with slightly more understeer. (Damn you FWD) I'm surprised they aren't more popular.

I believe the SVT Focus will be like most SVT non-Mustang vehicles. They will become valuable and sought after about 5 years after production.

I like it for the price, but I've already been down that road. And now I've been tainted by horsepower lol

$6600

Good Luck with the sale, I don't think it will be successful but the best of luck none the less.

The SVT Foci on ebay go way too cheap, prolly that "buying sight unseen" stigma. You should be able to get $6k for your example locally if your not in a hurry. Dealers will ask nearly $9k for your car - they won't get it, but gives you an idea anyway. And yes they are VERY under appreciated. When people finally find out what SVT Foci are capable of (think hatch M3), maybe "some" magazine will do an article.

List your car in the big-city craigslists. It's free. Just delete all the email replies that want to buy "your item"........

Gotta be careful here - a lateral blow to the front bumper bends both unibody rails. Ask me how I know.............no don't.

Open the hood, and look straight down on the unibody rails. If you can't get your fingers between the water pump pulley and the rail, it's bent. The good news is the motor mounts stiffen the rails and the bending all takes place forward of the mounts - about $1000 to get straightened if you do all the other work.

2004 Focus SVT $7K w-71K at Stealership

Stealerships get more for a reason, liability. That car won't sale at that price unless someone local wants it. I see a few problems with his EBay add.

  1. Price is too high for an EBay auction
  2. Difference between buy it now and starting bid is too close.
  3. A person trying to get Stealership money.

Move the difference wider, drop the reserve down $2K (starting bid at $6600 is just a transparent reserve) and it should go. Otherwise he wants retail money for a private party sale. Difficult to pull that in this economy and get a reasonable loan. Most people don't have 7 large sitting in their pocket and banks just aren't giving money on things they can't verify. Pocket Rockets aren't cars most adults with high credit ratings want either, so that tells you where the interest rate will be IF someone will loan on it.

I feel for him, I really do. It is a nice car, but if I can find one on Autotrader, for the same money, same miles, and two years newer there is little hope for an EBay posting.

Maybe the geographic location influences the pricing. Autotrader pricing here is just as high as dealerships.

I do agree that $6k on ebay just ain't going to happen - no matter how you format the listing. I've watched dozens of SVTF bid up to only more like $3-$4k - about $2-$3k below typical local private party sales.

I have two teenage sons that I shopped cars for three years, and I've had two SVT Foci for 5 years. From the thousands of Focus-type cars I've shopped, $6k for a 77k mile SVTF is somewhat normal. It isn't GRM pricing, and it isn't ebay pricing. Just normal. And I am way, way cheap, so I wouldn't pay that myself - I look for some major maintenence milestone car (aka, needs timing belt) and do the work myself. I guess I'm GRM cheap. I suspect you are an engineer, like me. Cheap.

Agreed on all accounts, especially on the cheap. I am currently driving a Nissan Maxima I purchased with 108K for $2500 4 years ago. It now has about 180K and I have nothing outside of normal maintenance. I think I will let it die before I get something else.

I had a 03 ZX3, I loved that car, I suspect I would do the same with a SVTF. Next time around I will do a ZX5. two kids now need the back doors.

If you had a ZX3 and loved it, you would die for an SVT. Bet you've never driven one...? TOTALLY different animal than the ZX3 - much like comparing a E30 325e to a E36 M3. Really.

In 2004, they made the SVTF with 4 doors. Take your time, look hard and score one. Or skip it entirely and get a Mazdaspeed3.......!

Didn't meet the reserve a couple of weeks ago, so relisted. It IS well-built, and interesting as all get out. I'd love to own it. Held off bidding last time...it has snowed. Now, well...showing up at the CT DMV with the title saying it's a Toyota would be VERY interesting...

Not picking but why a clutch at 50,000.....is that considered normal?

They had a TSB that would correct a bad clutch. The one from the factory is too small and would wear out quick. You would get a bigger fly wheel and clutch with the TSB. Some have gone out in 10k, others have over 100k. I suspect most of that has to do with the person operating it. A majority of these cars were bought by kids and flogged to death. Mine was adult driven it's whole life and is still on it's pre TSB clutch.

The one thing about these cars I really dislike is poor pedal placement for heel and toe. Once you modify them to suit you they are pretty damn nice in all regards considering they were born with a FWD handicap.
