I drove an AWD 3.5 auto briefly and thought it was...well, kind of lackluster, really. Could be because of AWD differences, but it felt very underpowered, and the interior was typical Chrysler, which is to say cheap. It drove okay, but nothing special. Fairly high miles car, though. I'd take a Caprice or an Impala SS (rwd, of course) any day over the first gen 300s. That said, I did really enjoy the pentastar-powered 300s second gen.

Underpowered, mediocre mpg vs the 3.5, questionable casting and machining to name a few.

So avoid it if you want to go fast? I can agree with that. How good of MPG do you think a 3.5 gets? My 2.7 Magnum averaged 22-24 and got 25-26 highway. Not great but not any worse than the 3.5. Im curious what you mean by casting and machining problems.

The 2.7 when the water pump fails it dumps coolant into the crank case... Is a pretty good reason to avoid them.

Fixed before the LX cars came out. Besides that, it's very much the same thing as what everyone says about more expensive cars with similar hiccups: If the car is still alive in 2015, it's either already been repaired, or it's 'one of the good ones' that's never going to break. Yet noone ever applies that oft-repeated logic to the 2.7.

I think LX cars in general are pretty good. There are some issues with them, but nothing that would turn me away from them. I plan to own another.

If it was fixed before the LX cars came out why did I dump a gallon of coolant out of the oil pan from one a couple weeks back?

It is less common than the old 2.7, but can still happen.
