You've got a better chance here....
unevolved wrote: This is the largest single thing we learned last year. We spent way too much time making sure our car was flawless going into concours, and were floored when it got 15th. Know why? A boosted, plain white Civic is boring. We're doing all our serious engineering and planning NOW, and come October, it's party time. With all the stress and hassle I'm going through now, I challenge you to find someone more relaxed than me at the host hotel (yes, we're staying with everyone else this time). As soon as we get there, I'm cracking open a beer and checking out. My job's to get the team to competition with a fast car. Once that's done, my people can take care of themselves.
Ding ding ding!
Fast, but boring. I've had cars like that.
I learned the exact same lessons after my first year, and every year since then I've had more fun. My first Challenge car was a Subaru SVX. Boring, but fast. Grmers have been significantly more excited about my Yugo (aka The Yugo From Hell). Slow, but a very fun story.
I go looking for the creativity, not perfection. It's all about the stories, and the editorial content.
The joy of being at the Challenge to me is that I get to see the creations in person, instead of reading little blobs about them. And sometimes, the stuff I like isn't the same as the stuff the editors like. I get to see it, even if it doesn't get a big feature in the magazine.

You're going to race in drag?
Not my style, but it should get you in the mag!
Good answers guys! Now I get it. Just have fun and be creative. Sounds even better now. I do wish that there were links in the mag to the builders website or online photo gallery as I would like to see a lot more about many of the entries than is possible in the magazine, even of the feature article cars. Is that info available somewhere here and I have missed it?

I don't do drag. I run fast when chased....I got fast sneakers. I run faster when chased by someone in drag....it don't matter what's on my feet.

We will post our build site at a later date.
My seven year old, on first seeing my latest Challenge aquisition said, "Dad! That doesn't have any wheels! It'll be a PERFECT drag car!"
Watch out, Andy. I just might consider dragging my drag car in drag.
Remember...I'm the guy who road the 1320 on a tandem bicycle!

and not even that much slower than the fiat
True...
...and it didn't get me in the mag.
Maybe there's something to say for the whole drag thing.

hey SVreX, this year let's do a pass with me on the back. i've been riding a lot over the last year, and think i can hammer pretty good for a quarter-mile of flatland.
Oh dear Lord...
...I'll confess my mortality and admit that it nearly killed me last time.
Don't forget, Angry...it's a 40 year old single speed stingray with coaster brakes and 20"wheels. Those pedals were cruisin.
What the heck...I'll do it.
Does it get us in the mag?
In reply to SVreX:
how bout I race you both heads up, you guys on the tandem and i'll use a big wheels?
I probably won't have a car but I need to come and enjoy the party I missed a couple years ago.
Awesome! If the Angry one is in, You're on!
Hey, wait a minute...this big wheels doesn't have a motorcycle engine, does it??

I'll take that Challenge.
Frame swaps are allowed right? Something along the lines of the '40s Chevy body (I think thats what it was) on the cop car chassis.
The Volkswagen is a unibody, the frame was just metal work in that case.
A locost was never a production road car
As I understand it, it's another grey area. The "generating editorial content" clause applies here.
I'd bet if one were to engineer a tube chassis inside a unibody car that retained its outer structure, but on the inside kept floor pan, firewall, etc, in presence (but not function) that it would be allowed to compete in the production car class as the suspension redesign would be just that, a suspension redesign with only as much structural modification to the original body of the car as necessary to perform the (extensive) modifications.
You've got the concept right, but you described it wrong.
Tube frame cars are not allowed. Suspension, motor, trans swaps are unlimited.
The correct way to describe what you are talking about is a unibody car, retaining as much of the original unibody as possible to facilitate the desired (extensive) changes, with lots of reinforcing added (which looks an awful lot like a tube frame when it is done).
Same thing. Different description.
