I still say the golden age of motoring was the '60s and early '70s. We had E-Types, Triumphs, MGs, and the Muscle cars.

In other words, nothing that actually handled worth a damn.

What, like the Porsche Carrera RS? Or the 914-6? Lotus Elan maybe? No, still no good? How about the Ferrari 250 then?

my 1969 TVR Vixen S2 handled exceptionally well
In reply to Javelin: Non of us could afford those car back then and we cant afford them NOW.
Were talking about real world joe money and cars.
A 2011 toyota camary with a V6 and a auto would make a old ferrari look silly in this day and age.

Im sorry but they made 11/10 sec bolton mustang GTs in the early 80s and 90s? They didnt exist unless you think 13s were fast?
The 90s is when motoring got decent the 80s.......I mean really now? You show me something truly fast from the 80s that was 11sec that you can drive every day that was not a F40 or was a 100,000 car supercar.
Most cars are still PIGS!
The mustang GT for 30,000 is the fastest car money can buy that makes sense. 12.7s bone stock from the factory with car and driver testers! Also runs with and can take out a V8 M3!!!!!

My car is capable of 11s. It's from the 80s. It's my DD.
But really... i couldn't care less about quarter miles, and i'm not sure that quarter miles are really what's being discussed. There's racing and things to do with cars beyond driving it straight for a few seconds.
I'm not sold on the Stang GT being the fastest car $30k can buy. Unless you put in the following caveats: "New," and "In a straight line for 13 seconds."

Only because it's riding on 245 tires with a tread compound softer than gumballs of the day. You put modern tires on old cars, even with their original suspensions, and they will flat-out embarrass any modern MacStrut FWD POS.

GM did that 7 years ago with the GTO...

Sadly, the gold car you see to the left of this post disagrees with you.
It would very much depend on how good the original set up relative to the tires available. Take the GTV- it was tuned very well for '70's rubber, but it's not great on modern rubber- takes some reasonable changes to be great on modern rubber. I don't know if the same can be said of cars in the 80's or 90's- just throwing that possibility out there.

My point was that back in 1984, or even 1990, you couldn't walk into a new car showroom and buy a factory production car that had vaguely close to the power that even a base Mustang has today. Only way back then was bolt on, like you said, or have a hugely fat wallet.
I also agree with 92Celica. Straight line performance isn't everything. It's way too overrated. Hell, my '06 Sedona can do 110mph in a straight line. Big berkleyin' deal. But how well can it stop, turn, transition? Cars 30 years ago were so much lighter, and weight is the enemy of handling. But that said, I still think a modern sports car can handle as well as or better than the majority of older cars.
