SWMBO has a new gig, with a new commute, and she wants an electric car (free electricity at her office). We're looking at 2013-15 Volts, as I read about the "hold" feature, and we need to make 500-mile trips a few times a year, so no full electric.
Anything I ought to know about these before we start shopping?
2nd gen volts and so much better than 1st gens.
They're pretty bulletproof.
I love my 2014. Get a premium though so you get the heated seats and backup camera.
At some point they stopped requiring premium fuel for the ICE. I can't recall if it was 2014 or 2nd Gen...
Free office electricity totally makes this the right move.
How many miles from home to office?
I have a 2012 Volt, and its "mountain mode" setting is pretty much the same as the "hold" setting. It has been bulletproof over 100,000 km so far, and incredibly cheap to run. Running on dead dinosaurs, it gets better mileage than our previous 2011 Fit. As a commuter appliance, there's none finer.
Mountain mode on the early cars holds 13ish miles of electric range.

Her commute is 12 miles each way. Three charging stations at her office, which are rarely used...
@MrChaos -- 2nd gen looks appealing, but we're too cheap to buy a newer car.

Whats the going rate on used ones these days?
12 miles. Sweet.
You could probably do all your charging at the office.
100% free charging!
