I actually don't mind it. I would like to see it in person.
Unfortunately, now that there is a 4dr wrongler there really isn't a need for more proper off-road machines. And chances are it will still be 500x more capable as an SUV than a Sorento or Escape.

The 4x4 forum I frequent is all upset at Jeep diluting the name. When the first Cherokee came out it was laughed at because it was unibody. The common complaint was "Real 4x4s have frames. That danged thing is a car!" When Jeep gave the Liberty IFS, uproar was heard. People still get all worked up over the square headlights on YJs. The Patriot/Compass twins have been bashed for years because they are too "car-like". The way I see it is all those cars that have upset enthusiasts and offroaders (who dont typically buy many brand new cars) sell like the proverbial hotcakes and make Jeep lots of money. Then they can keep making the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited in all sorts of packages from no AC bare bones to Rubicon. There is the hard core 4x4.
In a world of blandness its nice to see controversial styling.
You make very valid points.
In 72 jeep guys complained of amc and their E36 M3iness
In the late 70's everyone derided the Levi's cj's
The cj people hated the yj.
The xj was derided by everyone and their mother.
The zj was laughed at.
The tj was laughed at by everyone, plastic dashboard lol wut.
I was part of it and now realize the infighting is stupid and just dilutes the great jeep sense of community. I am sorry for every yj or xj owner I bashed back in the day.
Even the kj was ok for some moderate wheeling.
People need to just grow up.
who here remembers round headlights?

I forgot about all the TJ hate. "Coil springs?!?!"
This is just offensive to look at. I can personally guarantee that this generation Cherokee will never be competing at the Challenge.

My wife had a Cherokee, and currently has a Liberty.
I get the love for the old Cherokee. They're pretty awesome. I don't get the hate for the Liberty. My wife's has 4WD with the 2 speed transfer case. We just had a snow storm here, and with regular tires, her Jeep got places my Mazda couldn't with snow tires. Ground clearance and the right ratios are a beautiful thing. With snow tires, it would be a beast. I'm quite convinced that in the right hands, a stock Liberty could do almost anything that a similarly equipped stock Cherokee could do.
With that look I think they are going after the Lexus RX market.
I don't care for the looks of it. Maybe it will sell.

If memory serves the TJ got listed as the most capable off road vehicle in the history of the civi-Jeep.
I can't remember the metric or which one of the rags that rated it, but it was a fun read.
Hey, it's a JEEP. It will sell.
They just need a "black" version.
One word, Evoque. Land Rover sold too many and made too much money for people not to sit up and notice. People want to spend money on swoopy little SUV thingies.
It looks like it berkeleyed a Juke!
They've got ugly down pat.

what i never liked about the liberty is the stupid engine that has never been improved on in the entire lifespan even while the wrangler received a better engine in the 3.8L and the rest of the whole range got the 3.6L a few years ago.
though it's rated for more HP the torque delivery isnt as useful as the old 4.0L while simultaneously doesnt improve on the (in)efficiency much.
I will say the liberty tows significantly better than the XJ. and it rides a lot better probably due to the IFS and more rigid unibody.
does jeep plan to keep the compass and the "cherokee"? arent they the same mediocre-at-everything kind of soulless appliance?

I see that Jeep is capitalizing on the good looks and positive reviews of the Nissan Juke.
i actually sort of like the juke design partially because the thing really is uniquely shaped, this jeep looks like every other boring crossover with their own take on the shape of grill/lights.
Just because the XJ may have been laughed at early on, it still came with solid axles, flexible and utterly simple suspension and one of the best Jeep engines ever IMO (referring to the 4.0). The potential was always there whether people saw it or not. This thing however... Not so much. I guess I'm expecting too much from Jeep. Getting back to simple, basic drive trains that can be built cheaply and easily to handle the rough stuff

I like Subarus but I'd have to say Subaru is still the king of WTF styling.
To me that jeep looks like it's sitting in water up to the headlights and it's creating an illusion that's making it look...weird.
I'll never buy one of those, or any new car for that matter, so I really don't care.
If GM made a cheap, stripper version of the G8 with your choice of engines (4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2, etc..) I'd be seriously tempted.

word is that it's a FWD/FWD-based drivetrain out of the Giulietta/Dart. Can we stop calling it an SUV and just call it a tallish, ugly station wagon?

park an XJ next to an Unlimited and look at the massive size difference. I had an XJ on 31s with a mild lift, and next to my co-workers Unlimited it looked like a miniature truck. The XJs were small enough to handle the tight trails and park in normal car parking spots, while still having a really big cargo area. The Unlimited has similar interior space, but is MUCH bigger of a vehicle.
I just realized I've owned all three Jeep 1987 4x4's. an XJ, a YJ and an SJ. Just sayin!
Bring back the AMC Eagle!

Reality doesn't matter. Yes the tj is a good jeep, but when it was being developed it got the same b.s. scrutiny that this thing is getting.
Iditotic fear of something new, it's a jeep thing you wouldn't understand.
