Is this actually going to happen? A salesman at the jeep dealer told my sister there should be a pickup version of the wrangler called the gladiator with a 5 speed and 4 cylinder diesel available in the next few months. I will believe it when I actually see one, but has anyone else heard anything about this?

Google shows a few blog sites quoting some exec saying '15 was a possibility for the Gladiator truck. The Gladiator concept truck is pretty old now & if I remember right is based off a Ram truck.

Jeep offered(s) a body kit factory option to turn the JK into a "truck" & AEV has been doing it after market for years.

Sounds like a good idea....

I desperately want this AEV Brute:

But jeep already makes a pickup bed for the JK (4 door) that you can install:

I'd expect the "factory" jeep truck to be the latter, not the four door with bed.

To the "diesel" question- I've read that it'll most likely be the VM 3.0 that they are putting in the RAM and the Grand Cherokee. I don't think it'll make sense for them to federalize a four cylinder without plans to use it across their lines. I know the promaster has a 4 cylinder option, but I don't think that professional vehicles have the same restrictions as passenger vehicles (?). Also, curious as to whether they put a manual behind the diesel- I think in a wrangler, to appease the masses of jeep freaks, they'd have to offer it that way, but again, I think they'd have to do another whole round of federalization for each transmission option. Either way, the prospect of a Wrangler that has fuel economy of 20-something combined is pretty exciting.

Not bad looking and if the bed is a decent size I think it will be a hit. But why the heck are they not calling it the Comanche?

Ohh my poor dear young man..

Let me introduce you to a gladiator.

The commanche is cool, but it is no and will it never be a gladiator.

So therefore.. Gladiator, being the pinnacle of jeep trucks, is the proper name.

Because if they aren't going to call it a Scrambler then its not going to be a Comanche.

If a salesman said it then I doubt there's a shred of truth to it.

(Puts tail between legs and walks away humbled) lol thanks fueled by caffeine , I have never heard of a gladiator before. I just remember always thinking the Comanches were a cool different pickup compared to the thousands of fords Chevys and dodges.

y'know, I am on the everlasting lookout for that perfect family vehicle that combines some enthusiast fun and practicality, and the jeep JK 4 door keeps calling my name, but I keep getting hung up on your points. We aren't a "wheeler" family (though we camp a lot), and I'm not a frat boy. Rugby yes, frat, no. Oh, and to clarify the camp thing- I'm interested in expanding our car camping past the beaten path.

just because you own a jeep does not mean you need to take it past impossible trails strewn with boulders. Taking it "off road" is simply that. It can mean anything from a well groomed fire road to a rutted old carriage way. Either one is still offroad and more than the mall crawlers would ever do.

Actually I think it is a brilliant concept. People are clammering for smaller more fuel efficient vehicles and some people just do not want to deal the the size of a full size truck.

A diesel Jeep pickup would be perfect. Not to mention it would already have a niche buy in initially. As long as it was an actual truck, with truck capabilities it should work nicely.

Just be careful with the price.

I saw one of these the other day. It was impressive; I always had a thing for Jeep trucks.

If they FINALLY build one of these, I may have to bite, especially if it has a fuel efficient diesel engine. I'd really like to see them build the J12 Concept truck, I thought that was the coolest looking one.

Towing. Towing. Towing. Give me one that will drag 4klbs down the interstate happily and still crawl through a swamp and I'll be on board.

The problem with that is that the things that make a truck good at offroading and the things that make it good at towing are at odds with each other.

yeah. I know. But they used to say that about trucks and good gas mileage too. I'm just lobbying early.
