I propose all threads about new cars be banned on GRM. It's apparent the GRM-tifosi will absolutely never be happy with any car that's been released after the 1991 CRX.

A quick Google showed the '66 Mustang at 2,445 pounds. I couldn't handily find a listed weight for the early Camaros. However I think any company with the technology staff of GM or Ford should still be able to produce a decent pony car weighing under 3,000 pounds!
STAHP!
Seriously, there were no real crash regs back then. Complain all you want about terrible drivers and everything. Guess what, the terrible drivers aren't going away so a car thats safer when they inevitably plow into us is OK by me.

The CRX that was a big bloated pig compared to its precessor???

3,000# doesn't seem to be too big a hurdle. There are new cars still being produced at that weight which have all the current safety stuff! Look around!
Oh wait, if you're in that new Camaro, you can't look around.
In reply to z31maniac:
New 2016 Miata is under 2400 lbs in US spec with airbags and all the safety gizmos and what not.
Your argument is invalid.

Miata, Cayman, BRZ, Mazda2, M3, NSX, RX7, Fiat 500 Abarth.
Yeah we hate new cars.
We hate fat cars, there is a difference, and beside the CRX was wrong wheel drive.
Based on this thread, it's a good thing that nobody is forced to buy a car.
FlightService- so when the Camaro outsells the Miata, Cayman, BRZ etc- then what?
It's not as if the cars you list are cars that 98% of Pony car buyers even consider as choices. Back in 64, when the Mustang came out, compare that with the Mini, or any other tiny car that was smaller. So on a relative basis, the early cars were pigs, too.
Pony cars are not sports cars, nor are they sub-compact cars. Comparing this to those is interesting, but not exactly valid.

Yes, yes I do. I have written a few warranty claims working at a dealership. If you mod the engine and your mod is anyway connected to the failure. You own it. If the turn signal stops working, your covered. You burn through a piston, break a transmission, hell sling a cv boot, all of that is something that dealt with your turbo mod (i.e. more power) and you own it. Not to mention if your new turbo introduces extra heat in the engine bay, then I am sure a nice team of lawyers will get you on electrical too so maybe that turn signal isn't covered. Are you tuning the ECM without factory permission? Then everything in the powertrain is void. You will have to prove it wasn't your tune that caused the damage.
Then it is just cheaper to buy a new car to go with the broken one in comparison to legal fees.
As far as problems, you add power, you add wear. Those engines are built to a price point on bearings and such. The blocks are fine, I am sure. GM does a great job on the platform which is why they are hot rodders heaven but the little things that make a race engine able to be a race engine aren't there because of costs. Hell some of the C5 Vettes had oiling problems because they didn't go down that road.
I am not a Camaro buyer. I answered the OPs question. At that weight power I would rather have a Charger Hellcat. If I am going to have the weight I am going to have the comfort to go with it. I love the new Stang. Won't buy one of those for the same reason.
Un-wrap from the axle and understand you are reacting to an opinion with your opinion. Just remember what everyone says about opinions.
Wasn't the Mustang originally just a "secretary's car" version of the Falcon? Get it with a 144 or 170 six or, if you were really adventurous, a 260 V8. It wasn't until later that Ford decided, hey, let's put some fun engines in this and throw some suspension tweaks at it and invade SCCA racing.

Your argument would be just as valid, by your own statement, if you asked "what happens if the Camry outsells the Miata."
And just for full disclosure, I was in serious thoughts about buying the previous model because my kids are so smitten with Bumble Bee that I thought they would get a kick out of it,(and yes, it would have been the yellow one with black sticker kit.) I just couldn't get around the visibility, lack of useable trunk opening, and weight. Instead I bought the X3, then I only complained about the weight, but got AWD, I could see, huge trunk, and rode very nice.
In reply to Flight Service: Hey we all make purchase choices for various reasons. The Main reason I bought a '69 Road Runner new instead of a Super Bee? I loved the "Beep Beep" horn on the Road Runner. Yes,it only went "Beep" when you pushed the horn button once. But I and every other owner would sound it as "Beep Beep" when we encountered each other.
BTW: You could really see well out of that car! Which was good because Johnny Law really loved to write them up!
As was said the Camaro, Mustang, AMX, Challenger and Cuda were never intended to be sportscars. They were always beasts that had to be manhandled around a road course. I don't get why people here want them to be something that they are not, never were and never will be.
Go play with your little Miatas and frisbees and leave the big V8 RWD Ponycars to the big boys
Oh, and I never had any issues with visibility in the old new Camaro, it could have been better but it wasn't as bad as some would have you believe.
All of you "it should weight less than 3k lbs!" people are aware that this car seats 4 and is engineered (almost certainly) to handle the 650hp motor out of the Corvette/CTS-V, right? It comes with 455hp. It takes fairly substantial architecture to handle that. Find me a substantially lighter four seater with 450hp. I can't think of one off hand.

I think the wheels + that particular color have a LOT to do with that.

What if one doesn't want 450hp? Should a half-ton truck have the same frame, suspension, and drivetrain as a one-ton?
Me, I'll remain unimpressed with the Camaro other than the sheer fact that it exists (which says good things about the state of the auto industry) but I'm sure the Camero is going to kick ass.

Uh, I was using the cars you listed as examples that they are not nearly as popular as Pony cars are. It wasn't my list of cars.
As for the "previous" car- you mean the current one, don't you? We are talking about the future one.
Meh, doesn't look bad, but I'm not super excited by it either. Rear quarter shot looks a lot like new Mustang, which isn't a bad thing, but needs more differentiation from it's main competitor.
The weight loss of 200lb is good, but I think it's possible to engineer a car like this, with a V8, conforming to modern safety standards and have it weigh between 3250lbs and 3500lbs.
The giant wheels and tiny greenhouses need to go. Tired of needing a backup camera and not being able to put my elbow out the window.
Yall like to bitch a lot, its going in a good direction compared to 10 years ago when camaros were no longer being built. They have a long way to go but are on the right track.
And like someone said, gm produced a smaller, lighter, rwd turbo car years ago but no one bought enough soltice/skys that they made off like dodos

Who doesn't want 450hp??
