The field is drying up so the event is still on for tomorrow. Now to get my wheels swapped and the Miata on the trailer. Such hardship to get it ready to race.

My plan to be unprepared this morning worked!  Now I have to go home, get my stuff, go to garage, get more stuff, then actually leave...

Bump.

Anybody know if there's going to be any restrictions on crew/spectators?

In reply to MrChaos :

OVR events have no non-competitors on site, not sure if that was an OVR thing or SCCA recommendation

For scca spectators are not allowed but crew is.

That was what I was thinking.

Thanks guys, likely a moot point, swmbo was off by an hour on when we had to leave so they're likely going to stay home.

The RWD driver lineup looks awesome.  I would have loved to be a class filler if the second coming of Coronavirus hadn't just hit Florida.

I am pretty curious about the MR2 in stock rear.  I took a serious look at that car before I bought my BMW because it weighs 2200 lbs with an lsd and weight over the rear wheels.  I couldn't figure out if a European OEM hardtop on a US spec car was a loophole or an intended rule change so I passed.

Also intrigues me, but as I understand it hardtops don't exist in the US and the only way to get them is from europe at like $2-3k. If that's true then the car + hardtop purchase price is just as expensive as a boxster + hardtop. The mr2 is lighter and I assume narrower but we proved that to not really be an issue with the boxster. I'd guess the mr2's lack of torque particularly down low hurts it at least a little. If I was going to rallycross a mr2 I'm pretty sure I'd still pick a hardtop/sunroof n/a sw20, at least until it's fully impossible to find a reasonably priced one that isn't rusting to pieces.

That's Draco.  I would not put it past him to import a hardtop in order to get the chassis he wants.

He bought that car to replace his mental fast Evo X.

In reply to dps214 :

I agree on the boxster.  I bet the MR2 could hold it's own on higher grip, dry courses though.  The thought that my car could be banned because someone protested the hard top because it was only available with European crash structure, not federalized crash structure leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't know how realistic it is, but I would love it if all of the RWD classes ran in the same heat.  MR is 50% nationals winners, PR has Shawn and Katie who are super fast, and I am curious where Draco with the MR2 and snow tires end up in comparison.  I am sort of surprised that the MR2 is listed as a 2003 which means it has an open differential.  Maybe the car is on it's way to a prepared build.

In reply to ojannen :

The rules do not specify US market.  I also remember there being a rule that a car built to Euro or Japanese spec is allowed, and this also applies to reshelling?

I don't want to speak for Draco, but last year we were talking about simplifying and the niceness of competing in Stock, so I doubt it will slide down the hill of modifying it until it is no longer fun.

In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :

I know that's what happened, I'm saying I don't really think the chassis is good enough to justify that much effort and expense. I'm sure he'll be fast in it regardless, at '18 nationals he (in the evo) was the only stock class car that went faster than Ryan in the boxster, and by a pretty decent margin.

In reply to ojannen :

Once you get the weight over the rear wheels the diff doesn't do much. The boxster has almost 50% more torque than the mr2 and probably even more below ~3k rpm and we never felt like it was lacking a diff outside of maybe the first twenty feet of the course. And even then it still visibly launched better than anything else.

In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :

My challenge car is a 2.3 Z3 which is awfully close to the Euro only 323ti.  I am probably pulling the driveline out of the car after the challenge to put in a better drivetrain and turn it into a hardcore autocross car.  I don't really want to be the guinea pig for euro conversion rules but I might swap everything over to my rallycross 318ti and see what happens.

Maybe Draco's car is a late 2003 build date for the 2004 model year with access to the helical lsd.

Sorry for the derailment.  If you have internet at the site, could you post a live timing link when the event starts?

Coming up this weekend and only 9 registered so far. You don't have to do both days but it is recommended for maximum fun.
