so maybe I need to read the rules first, but just reading the recent classic motorsports and grassroots mags in close succession makes me wonder:
CM says before going into a concours event, make sure you know the style of judging, i.e. Elegance alone? Story matters? Valve covers are correct color for that year (make/model specific)?
If I would be thinking of building a car for the GRM challenge (as I always do when I read the issue with the results), what type of concours judging should I prepare for?
Definitely not "valve covers correct color for that year" kind of thing...everyone would fail miserably
the only particular thing along those lines is that the engine must be VIN matching, you;ll finish dead last if the engine has been swapped or is otherwise unoriginal

Ever dropped just BARELY too much acid?
The Gutty Honda won the concourse at the last Challenge. The engine compartment was worthy of any concourse, anywhere. You could eat off everything under the hood, wiring tucked out of sight, great paint, etc. The rest of the car was equally as well executed. It's all about sweating ALL the details.
interesting about the VIN thing.
I thought I heard somebody say something about "more than two valve covers must be present" to score well or something.

It's not that type of concourse at all. Think clean, cool, and different...but mostly cool.
For reference the Gutty Honda:
Pat's Shadow:
Ed's Mustang:
Think of the Concours as more of a competition for the most "WTF?!?!?" with bonus points for cleanliness.

I love how smooth the Gutty car's engine bay is. That must have taken forever to do. So beautiful
Does story matter at all? Like would you get bonus points for 'this car was purchased by my uncle in south africa and then he brought it with him to the states. In my childhood at an ice fishing trip the car ended up in a lake and has been there until I bought the car from my uncle and pulled it out of his lake for this challenge.' ?
Not that I have a line on a car like that, but it would seem to make a well-executed challenge car cooler if that was the case.
Or am I confusing this too much with LeMons?
The judges like stories and bribes.
when bribing judges with hookers, be sure to pay a little extra and get live ones.
In reply to AngryCorvair: Remember to have adequate trunk space to carry said hookers should they expire

Or, just daisy-chain the largest zip-ties you can buy. Then you can just drag them to whatever that undisclosed site was that you told me about... That I can't remember.
The best we ever took was 2nd place at Concourse... and best visual package. Pat bested us at concourse, and I felt that his spotless engine compartment was his edge. (The paint was thin in our engine compartment, and any polishing threatened the return of the original paint colour.) I think it's well know that the Judges like: Motor Swaps, Themes, Ingenuity, Quality, and extremely tidy engine compartments. (Oh, and Quirkiness cant hurt.) I also think small car, big motor, earns points.
I wish we could have put our TR7 up on jack stands to remove the wheels for Judging. It was just as pretty underneath, but we could not use jacks in the concourse building.
Here's a quote from the official rules:
New for 2014 will be the parc expose. Cars will be parked in a centralized location, with hoods, trunks and doors opened for the judges and competitors to view. Entrants will have a maximum of 2 minutes to present their cars and share their story with the judges. Cars will be judged on innovation, execution and presentation, and scoring will be as such:
Innovation: 0-10 points
Execution: 0-10 points
Presentation: 0-5 points
“Innovation” covers things like design, engineering, creativity and modifications.
“Execution” covers things like cleanliness, workmanship and attention to detail.
“Presentation” covers things like originality, theme, showmanship, team spirit, moxie, chutzpah, backstory or anything else that falls under the heading of “je ne sais quoi.”
I've heard they give extra special bonus points for moxie...chutzpah, not so much.
for engineering i'd like to see analysis / calculations / etc, not just pretty welds and stuff that looks racecar-ish.

The best way I can sum it up would be: "How awesome would it be to do a feature article on this car?"
In reply to Tom Suddard:
Are all the fancy French words a clue we should make sure the hookers don't shave their arm pit and back hair.
