Saw this on the interwebz yesterday.. Glorious and downright frightening even over headphones, I love it!
I knew exactly which car you were talking about when I saw the title. You can see one of the pistons at the 44sec mark - it's the size of a paint can
So when does Jay Leno buy this beast?
Am I the only one that squinted and half-turned away when the exhaust flames shot out at the camera?

before I watched the video i thought, spray paint can sized piston? thats not huge, this thing must have like 80 cylinders. then I saw it...

Hand cranking isn't bad, but you do need to do it right every time. I hand crank all my antique engines. My 12 hp LeRoi is the worst of them and I won't let anyone else start it. It's snatched the handle out of my hand several times, but never bitten me. The pistons on it are about 4". The 3 hp has a bore in the 5" range, but the flywheels are so big that inertia keeps it in check.
28L on the other hand would be terrifying. I'd still try it.
Yes. I like how one of the mechanic dudes is wearing a tie the whole time he was working on it. God help me if I own a car in which I can do that.
I should film my build with artsy focus set to soft piano music....it really classes it up.
Fantastic car, glad I wasn't the one cranking it!

It might be a case of prime it, roll it up on compression, set piston at ATDC, add ignition. I kind of wondered the same thing.
Than again, most of my engines fire after I've already turned the handle loose.

Time for you to look up Detroit 24-71s.
24 Cylinders, 71 cubic inches each.

I watched it a couple of more times and it looks like he's pulling it across TDC on the compression stroke. Then you hear someone say something and it fires. I can't quite understand what he's saying, but it sound like "gas it."

Gallons per mile. But in the "Beast of Turin," I'd say those are gallons well spent.

it is fairly advanced for being 114 years old. 4 valves per cylinder and an OHC.. this was before most car makers were even a gleam in their creator's eye
