This is just a thought for after college and some bills are paid, but I've got a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 and I found a gen III 426 Hemi crate engine on Jegs. My question is would it tow a trailer worth a damn or would it be a car only engine?

To determine that, you would need to know the torque and power curves.
My wallet started moving away from the screen when I clicked that.
For that much cash why not trade in yours and buy a diesel?
Good point. I mean no matter what though it'll have more down low torque than my current engine.
Just don't become a bro-tato and turn it into a bro-dozer.

A what?
You know, the One Ton and 3/4 ton Diesels with a 6" lift, 22" wheels and a 55gallon drum in the bed for an exhaust stack with Fox decals in the back window...
Oh that. No way in hell. Lol I want a leveling kit, a little bigger tires, new wheels, and some gonads to push it
In reply to DaveEstey: because Im not a big fan of diesels. They may have better towing ability but everyone has one around here. I wanna be different lol. Plus I've gotten pretty attached to my truck
I still think this motor dropped in a new Charger would be quite entertaining.

Yes, about as interesting as a bolt-on srt8 charger, except with less of all the other good stuff like suspension and interior upgrades.
Still a good idea, dont get me wrong!

I wouldn't count on that. Bigass ports and valves generally translate into top end power. Modern properly designed stuff works pretty darn well.
I just read that, and even though its huge fun to troll Mopar guys, I'm not suggesting the hemi sucks- a big block chev with peanut ports makes better low down torque than a rectangular big port head, with all else being equal.

Oh I imagine the stock brakes would stop it just fine...right?
Yeah if one was going to do a 426 gen III in a Charger I think basically only the the stock shell would be used for the most part. I am fairly certain that that engine would completely destroy that transmission and rear in a heart beat. The best thing though would be if you could manage to make it basically just look like a worked over SRT from the outside or even just a run of the mill R/T
In reply to Streetwiseguy: my truck currently has a 4.7 magnum. The economy engine lol. Its got just enough torque to pull a bumper hitch trailer and a car.
In reply to DCharger68:
If you had the 5.7 Hemi in your truck I'd encourage exploring the swap. The wiring is different with the 4.7. There are a few other things that are different too. I haven't found any documented swaps going to a 5.7 or larger Hemi in any 4.7 Mopar. The mechanical bits shouldn't be too bad. The electronics could get ugly fast.
Since its still a few years out from a swap anyway, keep your eyes on the new Rams. The 6.4 Hemi (392) is going to be a regular production option if it isn't already. So there will be used 6.4 trucks out there to bring home, or use as donors.
You can get stroker kits for the 5.7 to make them a 6.4. I thought about that for a while.
