I've got a buddy with a 2000 blazer that needs head gaskets and a cylinder head but I see a 2012 4.3 crate engine long block for sale locally, would I be able to use it instead without too much fabrication?

That's a mighty good question.

For the most part, 4.3L engines carried the same changes as the 5.7L.

The only definitive thing I can say is that starting in 2002, the timing cover bolt pattern changed as part of the distributorless ignition.  They adopted an LT1-like ignition system.  This may make a difference in sensor compatibility for things like the CKPS and CMPS.

But as far as I know, the basic architecture didn't change.

I'd be very careful about crank sensor reluctor wheels.  My first guess would be no, based on that, although the wheel seems to be between the timing chain and the balancer pulley, so maybe parts can be swapped.  As long as the old timing cover and wheel and balancer fits...

The cam sensor in the new one is in the timing cover, the old in the distributor.  Is there a hole for the distributor (Likely yes) and can your distributor go in the new engine?  (Again, likely yes, because something has to drive the oil pump.)

Yes, according to the pictures there is still a hole for the distributor, I just need to make sure it has compatible teeth for the distributor (pitch, number material, etc) on the camshaft. Or I could swap the cam from the old engine to make sure it plays nice with the distributor.
