Typical GM FWD, I know, but I always liked them.
3.8L or 3800 is a pretty good motor when it doesn't have an intake coolant leak, plus both have the possibility of adding a blower. 4T60 tranny is nothing to write home about but reliable enough.
What about the rest of the car? Known issues? I'm starting to poke around for some low-mileage examples.

86-92 Olds Toronado. The Trofeo was the "sport" package; FE3 suspension, eyelid headlights, etc.

I'm pretty sure that they have plastic windshields. Expect it to be scratched and a replacement may not be easy to come by.

I think GM pitched this as a 325i competitor. Which means a 325i will be better in every possible way. I honestly think I'd rather have Delta 88 from the same years, as they were available in a two door sedan format (although somewhat rare) and have a more conventional dashboard, and parts should be cheap and easy to find with the same drivetrain as the Trofeo.
Or just, you know, buy a 325i.
I think some of them have traditional controls for HVAC. Wiki says the later ones are all analog gauges as a response to the reliability issues of the touch screen.
I always liked the look. Plus, that huuuge trunk will fit lots of bodies. ;-)

I'm thinking some very modest flares and some zero offset wheels could make them look really mean. The redesign in 1991 really added some meat to the rear fenders.
Modest flares with some Turbine wheels maybe?
I wish I were good with photoshop or drawing things. I can totally see this car as a chopped car with C5-type rear haunches.

Sounds like the obvious solution is to stuff an entire 325 drivetrain in a Trofeo, RWD conversion and all. That should take what, maybe a week tops?

I've heard of folks doing a Northstar/4T80E swap. If I didn't hate Northstars and 4T80Es so much I'd consider it.

I like the caddy 4.9 pretty well but it's hard to justify it vs a more 'bolt in' SC 3.8.
