Yeah dude - your name. The one that you gave yourself. Nice...
I'll tell you where you are wrong anyway. It's obviously an aspect of this whole GRM thing that you don't get. Would you want a Sienna with power sliding doors or a TR4? Chances are that the TR4 would lose in every single category, including 'fun to drive' but <5% of GRMers would choose it. Awesomeness trumps all practicality. JD gets it. You obviously don't get this part the same way as he (and I, and the majority of those replied to this post) do/does.
In my opinion, of course.

It's about enjoying the car. An '09 Accord might go round a given track faster than a Porsche 356. While you might be going round in the Accord, I suspect damn near everyone else here would be in the 356. Your reasons remind me of the car-as-an-appliance thinking of most people. If just getting to the destination matters more, might I suggest public transportation.
You guys are mis reading me. The reason why I got into this magazine was because it was about taking what was old, clapped out, forgotten, and weird; then turning that into something great that did things better than more expensive off the shelf alternatives. It was about making the inferior into the superior. (its about fun for cheap.. So buying a z06 for $8k would fit as well).
There is nothing superior about this vehicle and I do not understand why so many are fawning over a vehicle that is slow, will handle crappily, won't stop, gets m3h MPG, and houses a damned shed of engine. It's not that good. A 1.9TDI swap would be better as it would have more power, more torque, better driveability and not cost 2.5 times the cost of the car for a stupid rebuild kit.
The same reason why some people (me included) would get all giddy about the chance to drive and admire a Dusenberg Model J or an MG TC. It's the experience.

Right because each of those would be faster, stop better, and turn better than this shed.
seacrest out.

But they wouldn't pass your "Civic test." Your original comparison wasn't based on the Chevy vs these cars, but the Chevy vs a Civic. If a Civic "beats" the Chevy, it would "beat" the Model J and the TC.

Incorrect. A TC will outhandle my civic and a J will out accelerate it.
I'm quitting with the quote boxes, it looks like Jenga in here.
The SJ I saw did 0-60 in around 8 sec. Less powerful models capped 10 and beyond. Stock Civics (maybe not your's) can do it in the 6s. I'm also not too sure about that TC's handling vs the Civic's comment.

I think this is one of those things that you can't explain. Awesomeness (for lack of a better term) is the same to most of us as 0-60 is for you. I could explain the problem of explaining that 'awesomeness' factor to you by asking you this question:
On your DD, why do you care what the 0-60 time is so long as you can keep up with traffic?
^ Wife's Accent is about 10-ish seconds 0-60, but keeps up with traffic and will push 90+mph if you want.
Awesomeness (for lack of a better term) is the same to most of us as 0-60 is for you. I could explain the problem of explaining that 'awesomeness' factor to you by asking you this question:
Iggy, from one smart-ass to another, I'll give it a shot:
Natural Patina: Awesome
Late 40's/Early 50's styling: Awesome
The fact that you can still find a beautiful (IMO) 60 year old, running car, for ~$2k, amazes me. (awesome.)
Weird ass swap that makes almost no sense: Awesome (in a quirky way.)
This car wouldn't be used like I use my civic. This car would cruise me & mrs. poo to the drive-in down the street, soaking in the sounds of beautiful clacky diesel whiney turbo-ey goodness all the way. Slow and low (once it's bagged, of course,) can be just as fun as quick and nimble.
Of course, I'm totally wasting my time trying to explain to you why this is cool. To each his own and all that. Or as Grandpa poo used to say: "There's no accounting for other people's bad taste/Everybody's entitled to their own stupid opinion."
Merry Christmas, motherberkeleyers.
PS: tuna55's an expert on awesome if you ask me.

merry mother berkeleying christmas...
it's a sail boat kicker engine.. 60 hp when new.. Perkins = Cat = Junk.
about 120 ft-lb of torque.. it produces only 20 more ft lb's than my junky civic..
70's diesel tech = p00p
Ignorant:
I realize you don't get this. Let me try to explain.
I have 13 cars in my shop, and 5 in my yard. Almost all of them are totally cool, and would fit your idea of "superior" in one way or another. They include Miatas, a 323 GTX, a 5 spd SVX, 3 Lotuses, a Spirit R/T, a Yugo racer, among others.
I love all these cars, and enjoy driving them. They all have their own kind of "superior".
However, my 1960 El Camino is BY FAR the most fun. It weighs 4008 lbs, handles like a barge, has 60 ft time that I could outrun on a bicycle, and consumes fuel by the barrel. But every time I leave the house in it, I have an absolute BLAST, and everyone I see does too. I put a smile on people's faces everywhere, have to stop for extended conversations at gas stations with older folks reminiscing about their younger days, and have young ladies ready to jump in and do unspeakables with no prompting at all. They don't even want to be paid!
Regarding the diesel: I have seen women at car shows lift their shirts just so they could get a ride in a smoke belching terd.
Tell me again how your POS Civic is superior?
yeah... I was just being an shiny happy person.
I was just trying to get people to think above and beyond the "coolness" factor.. So often we look at something and don't actually digest what it is...
as a car the car is a turd.
damn right it looks cool and is a great engine swap. It probably required a whole E36 M3 ton of custom machining to get that weirdo engine to bolt up to the weirdo trans in that car. I'd drive it.
But as a "car" it is no better than my civic.. Thats the point.
Since when is there anything above and beyond the "coolness" factor??
We forgive you, Oh Ignorant one!
SVreX wrote: Since when is there anything above and beyond the "coolness" factor??
how about when your E36 M3 is broke and you need to get to the parts store....
Merry Xmas..

Your post says it all, for the most part. It's not superior in any sense. It's not fast, quiet, pretty, current, sticky, or any variation of these. But it was old and forgotten, packed with modern(for the time)ish tech, forgotten again, and here is this clapped out relic, ready for more slow cruising, a cosmetic redo, or yet another new beginning.
What you like about the mag are the formerly "old, clapped out, forgotten, and weird." This is the "before". So if you like the red Z06 with the shiney paint, why don't you like the blue Z06 with the fade and bald tires? This is just red car/blue car stuff.
