$500 Tsi Awd
Not mine, Though i wish it was. I called up the owner and it is supposedly smokey because of a blown turbo seal. Anybody have any experience in licensing a car with no papers? The guy says the rear diff is a 4 bolt. He said it like it was important, but i am not sure what that means.
Wow, I'm tempted. I currently own a 92 Talon Tsi AWD and wouldn't mind a parts car, but I don't have the storage space.
Hey Ali,
I'm thinking about getting a 1st gen as my DD. I know some of the things to look for, but not all. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything key.
Can you lend some advice?
From what I remember from my friend who used to race is 2G, the 6-bolt is the engine you want, which is why I'm going with the 1g . . .trying to avoid the crankwalk issues as much as possible.
It's going to be a DD that will autocross sometimes, but mostly a daily driver. I want to put some power to the wheels, do I have to worry about any of the driveline parts in particular, as in, any one or two more than the others?
I've got a ton more, but I don't want to be a burden.

4-bolt rear diff means it's got an LSD. Earlier models had an open rear diff.
4-bolt is stronger too, and a smokey turbo is just an excuse to get a 16g. I'd buy it in a second if it were local.
You could get an LSD 3 bolt diff. My 90 TSi AWD had it. Read a bit more Armitage.
The split was whether or not it had an automatic trans or ABS or it didnt. Basically if the car has an orange sticker inside the drivers door jam, the rear differential is limited slip. No sticker, no LSD. The way these cars were made there are very few hard set rules about options.
4 bolt differential uses 4 bolts to secure the axles to the axle cups. It is significantly stronger than the 3 bolt design used in Galants and 90-91 DSMs. The difference isnt just the 4 bolts, but the whole differential and axles are beefier. A good 4 bolt rear end from a 5 speed car is worth 250-400 alone. 4 bolt rear ends are good for all but the fastest drag cars.
The 3 bolt/4 bolt difference is only for cars that use a 1G style rear suspension like 1Gs and Galants, 2G DSMs have axles that are splined on both sides, and are generally considered as stout as a 4 bolt diff. A 2G with an LSD rear end is much more uncommon. I have only had 1 out of the 4 or 5 2G AWDs I have owned from various years.
Yeah thats a good price, part it out or buy another one and use this car as a donor. If the smoke is from a blown turbo, it should be crazy James Bond style smoke under hard acceleration.
I absolutely hate dsm's and I'd still buy it.
DSMs rock the house.
They epitomize "Fast, Cheap, Reliable. Chose 2"
lol. with dsm's I thought it was "1"

Heh yea, Choose 1 and it can't be the last choice no matter how hard you try!

Yes I am aware of this. I was making a generalization for simplicity.
