Pat
Don't show this to Hobbiercr, he might get delusions of grandeur :)
Seriously though, that is an awesome achievement for the venerable SOHC 8V, those sorts of numbers are rather expected with a DOHC head, so they are surprising with the SOHC motor.
Oh, I'm delusional but I'm not crazy. That is seriously impressive.
So Pat, this begs the question, what do think your Shadow is pushing out? For under $1000 I might add...

About 576...not quite as much as Reeves. Lol!

Weaksauce, are you already looking for excuses Pat?

Holy crap.. I still like yours better Pat
What kind of transmission do you use to:
1) Not scatter under the 550 lb/ft of torque ?
2) Not torque steer into the nearest ditch ?
This thing is INSANE.
For anyone that hasn't been in a GLH before... Think about sitting in one of the most rinky dink tin cans of a car you can imagine. The sheet metal is aluminum foil thin, and creature comforts are at the bottom of the early 1980's barrel. Scary car to drive in with the N/A motors they were originally offered with. I've been in a stock configuration T1 non-intercooler car, and that was a lot of fun. A T2 car with some mods is giggle-and-fear inducing.
But a 577hp GLH? This car must be capable of interplanetary travel.

Believe it or not, a stock 555 or 568 holds it. We do have trans failures, but not like you would think. James' car runs a 555 on a 520 main shaft to run a 3.50 year with a quaife diff. Stock case, stock gears, etc.

Bully.
looks like the dyno is in someones barn, not a complaint, just an observation. Cool for getting that kind of power!
Am I the only one that gets freaked out watching a high HP car on a dyno?
And I'm guessing my GLH had (not very) close to half that HP and it was an amazingly fun and fast car. I can't imagine that car.
I'm a huge Dodge Omni (Plymouth Horizon) fan. Thanks for the post.
I assumed Pat's "IROC" motor put out somewhere around 300 hp. Am I far off? I think My Daytona is rated at 224 stock.

The 16v motor I ran in the Shadow ultimately made between 475 and 500 hp when it was running correctly...which unfortunately for me was about 2 weeks after it's last GRM appearance. It ran a best of 10.57 @ 135.7 mph with a best trap speed for the day of 137.1. This was on about 30 psi of boost and a 50 shot of nitrous. Without any nitrous, it ran 10.98 @ 129.9. At the challenge, I had a O2 sensor snafu that I couldn't isolate in Gainesville, which left me with a car that was an absolute dog until about 6k, then screamed to 7k and died off again, which was why it only ran 11.7's but did so at 127 mph.
The 8v motor I ran in the ScAries was much more tame. At best, it makes about 350-360 whp.

Not that high. If I remember correctly, he's doing this under 7k with a power peak just below 6k.

Yeah like Rabbits were much better than tin cans? :) Keep in mind, the Omni is based around a Euro Talbot that came out before the Rabbit (and was available in Europe with a Lotus engine in the hot version). I didn't think they were particularly scary to drive and I've had or driven one of each version (GLH, GLH-T, GLH-S, SC, etc). You just learned to expect and cope for the torque steer, the changes they made in the turbo cars to reduce it helped as did the aftermarket with better motor mounts and proper wheel alignment/offset.
That reminds me of my uncle's GLH-T that I borrowed briefly. It had a stuck shuttle valve in the power steering system that caused the steering to be completely over-boosted (you could toss it from lock to lock with a finger) that was a little scary to drive, but oh-so-much-fun!
I don't miss working on the miserable things, but I truly miss driving them! Maybe someday I'll bump my head and seek one out to play with again. Then again, I own two Porsches now and I'm learning new levels of pain and suffering (changing the clutch hydraulics on a 951 is a PITA!), so a brief respite might be good for the soul :)
I would love to see more on Reeves' car (hint, hint cough in the magazine cough)

Well, if you think about the amount of air that needs to flow through a 2.5L engine to make that kind of power....

The "Tin Can" comment wasn't really a knock on the cars. I love these things!
I just remember crawling into my friend's GLH after he bought it and thinking that they were insane to build that car and release it to the market. After that ride with his tired T1 setup, I was hooked.
I ended up with the CSX because I like the Shadow for the same reasons, yet they are a slight notch above the Omni when it comes to livability and creature comforts. That and I think they look better.
The camera never focuses enough to read the numbers. It could have made 98hp for all we know. I believe it, it's an impressive build, but not exactly proof in that video.
In reply to SilverFleet:
Technically, the Shadow's were built to completely replace the Omni's. People kept buying the damned Omni's so they kept building them, which is why the 1990's came with the updated dash and steering column. Then the body stamps were destroyed/lost in some mishap so that was the end of the Omni/Horizon. Of course the 86 GLH-T/S were the ends of the Turbo Omni's and all of the Omni's after that were Non-turbo :(
I believe it, it's an impressive build, but not exactly proof in that video.
It goes 144mph in the 1/4 mile, so far. Everybody who already knows about the car believes it and mr. reeves is not much of a braggart despite his magazine write-ups so i doubt he'll be trying to win over any forum doubters anytime soon.
