OMG, it finally got made?!?
This is the AZ6 box that people were talking about on hachiroku.net like 6 years ago, right?

VERY similar to MY project begun 5+ years ago... YES!!!
Right now it is designed for the IS200/SXE10 Altezza version of the AZ6, but it is inline to be fitment checked on the Miata AZ6, and the RX8 AZ6 very soon!!!
Further development....
Seen above is an RX8 version of the Aisin AZ6... what is odd to those who know... that is NOT an RX8 bell housing!!! That is a Nissan S15 bell fitted to the Mazda AZ6.
Other developments... the S15 6th gear (best O/D gear of all) will fit on the J160 transmission, we will know shortly if the S15 6th fits the RX8 transmission, but we feel it should.
Finally, the adapter is now available to fit ALL 4 versions of the AZ6!!!
Further testing and development coming!!!

tbh any transmission adapter is going to be expensive look at advanceadapters.com and those are for common v8's to fairly common tranny's.

You can't get RX-8 transmissions with bent shift linkage for $200 anymore, either.
Not to sound like a buzz kill but, what does this extra 6th gear do for your? I see the charts on the gearing and speed, maybe I'm just not seeing what's clear to everyone else. Is the T50's gearing too wide, or are you looking for fuel economy?

Road and Track... Feb 1985 - Begin middle column. The Cliff's Notes version.... the ratios are poorly spaced in an AE86 T50(T50 = AE86 transmission)
The AZ6 in essence allows me ALL good things! A mixed gear set up(Miata ratios for 1-5, and the S15 6th) would allow a creeper 1st gear. Then gears 2 thru 5 would be the close ratio section, and finally ending with a .767 O/D for highway mileage
gear ratios for the AZ6
S15 6 spd 3.626 2.200 1.541 1.213 1.000 0.767
NISMO 2.907 1.989 1.537 1.218 1.000 0.862
RX8 6 spd 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.187 1.000 0.843
Miata 6-spd 99- 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.257 1.000 0.843
SXE10 6 sp 3.874 2.175 1.484 1.223 1.000 0.869
TRD 3.106 2.175 1.585 1.223 1.000 0.869

It allows you to have your cake and eat it too. It gives you closer gears than the stock T50 (less rpm drop on the upshift and better acceleration) AND it also means that a trip on the highway no longer involves continuous running at 4000+rpm.

How about a 6 speed AE71.... note at the base of the shifter, the plate covering the old shifter hole

I'd beg to differ. I think the Miata, RX-8, and Altezza all have a pretty bad first gear. Not quite T-50 bad, but they are all low enough (numerically higher) that you are going to be out of the powerband shifting to second. With the S15, at least you have a chance of using first for something other than a parking lot, and the rpm drop on the upshift to second isn't so horrendous, and it has the tallest overdrive for highway cruising, and it has one of the closer 3rd-4th upshifts also!
That said, I just bought a second SXE10 six-speed yesterday! Oh well, at least I now have a second transmission to try and shove some Nissan ratios into!
Here's the one I keep coming back to. Now, granted, I am putting in a new engine along with the six-speed, so the rev limit has changed, which may not be the case in other builds, but...
What are the main problems with a T50 and the stock 4.3 final drive? Threefold in my experience: First is crazy low, and the corresponding gap to second is too wide. Third to fourth is just a little too wide also. OK, so far we need first to be a little taller and fourth to be a little shorter. The final problem is that top gear isn't tall enough for comfortable cruising at typical North American highway speeds, so we also need a taller top gear.
Well, guess what happens when you put an S15 six-speed in front of a 3.9 final drive. Hmmm...all of the above.
