I came across this doing my usual craigslist search. I wonder how it got into the US?

Back then there was a fairly active grey market so it may have been imported when new (I have an '86 M535i that came here that way.) Otherwise it may have been sneaked across the border from Canada if it got here recently. I'd make sure it went through EPA and DOT federalization (and still has the paperwork to prove it) and has a valid title with no fake VIN or anything like that, before I'd get serious about buying it. Plus, I'd think even in euro trim a 520 will be kind of slow, although getting 30mpg would be a plus.

Huh. Wonder why somebody bothered with it. It's interesting, but that price is no bargain.

I saw that listing also. Here is what i found interesting, in 1990 driver passive restraint became law. That law lead to these types of choices:

Automatic seat belt on a track like what you find in a Ford Escort from the era. or...

Passive seatbelt, (the worst type) like those in a Chevy Lumina where the belt was built into the door and the expectation was that you left the belt attached when you opened the door. or...

The third and most expensive version was a driver's side air bag.

This BMW has none of these. My guess is that it is/was not legally here.

I thought the passive restraints came in on a certian month... if car was built a week before that date its kosher... but i don't know for sure... just what I read
