I am shopping a CRX that I may use as a commuter. It seems that it may need a brake master cyilnder and a clutch.
Due to winter and my schedule, I may just have to pay to get these done.

What would you expect to pay for a new clutch job?
What would you expect to pay for a new master cyilnder?
Seems that the driver's door hinge sags when opening. How tough of a job is this?
I don't have answers but for the guys that do know these cars well, what does the pillar around the hinges look like? That is, is rusting of the pillar the possible culprit, or is it just a hinge pin that's gotten worn out?
Hi,
My local independent Honda shop charges $650 for a clutch and $400 for a Master Cyl. (New Honda M. Cyl)
The sagging door could be a BIG rust problem. Check it out very carefully,
BTW: I have an 89 Civic SI with 258k and it is easily the best car I have ever owned. I believe that my car has another 100k miles in it easily.
Good luck,
Rog
Good tip to look for rust at the hinge. I have not yet seen the car. These are things I was told by the owner over the phone.
former coworker is still driving the '91 crx si that he bought in '94. commutes from toledo to detroit everyday. car has over 425k on it and the head's never been off.
By far the biggest worry with these cars is rust. Check the rear wheel arches carefully, as well as the sills and floor.
Clutch is $150 for the parts and a day to do at home, shops quote $500-$650. Put a $200 Fidanza flywheel in there at the same time - it is 8 lbs, the Honda one is 30+.
The master cylinder is a pain - have it done at the same time as the clutch as it helps to have the drive axle out when you do it.
Wondering, what does having the drive ? axle out have to do with a master cylinder.
The master cylinder on my CRX was really easy; never had to mess with the driveshaft. Clutches are an easy, if dirty, job on a well-driven car.
As for rust http://www.rogerspace.org/rogertiii/rustfaq/rustfaq.htm
most of these examples are EXTREME, but all good places to look. I have never personally seen a CRX with rusted door hinge areas, but you are in the salt belt... Most of the time, that problem was caused by a prior collision.
On my 91 CRX I paid:
$450 for clutch
$50 + part cost for the master cyl.
$250 for timing belt+ H2O pump
$110 for Axel's
$80 for front brakes
$70 for Rears.
$20 per corner for koni shock install (obviously paid for the shock separate)
After all that and some odds and end I bought a Miata and learned how to work on my cars myself!!!!
If you were closer, I would say bring it over. Quotes sound about right FWIR.
On Hondas, at least this and similar models, I believe the hinge is WELDED in place. Be very careful to look for rust if a door is sagging.
That said, I owned a '89 Civic, and rode in several 1st and 2nd gen. CRXs....great cars that can be upgraded, if need be.
