Does the engine/tranny from a 914 fit into a 911? Good or bad idea?
Stan
Like all things on this board, it depends on what your definition of the word 'fit' is. Something like this is always a good idea.
Google "912E" to see the factory version. A one year only model (1976) between the last 914's and the first 924's.
the type 4 engine in the 914 can be easily bored and stroked to 2.3 litres and be reliable. The 914 transmission is basically a 901 trans with a side shift (depending on the year) and a flipped ring gear.. so yes.. both parts will easily live under the rear of a 911.
and yes.. in 1976 when 914 production stopped.. Porsche had a few thousand type4 engines sitting around doing nothing so decided to resurrect the 912 name and threw them under decontented 911 bodies

I thought 914 engines were bug engines. There was the Beetle, and the Ghia, and the 914 right?

True. A hammer and $$$$ and anything will work (as we've all seen many times here).
I was just looking at something a bit closer to plug-and-play and remembered the last 912s.
They share characteristics with VW van engines. Basically you get VW performance for Porsche prices.
Please forgive my lack of knowledge about Porsche's, but are we talking about removing the flat 6 for a flat 4?

Fixed.

To TJ. I didn't think they were Bug engines. I've never seen a fuel injected 2.0 Bug; but you know I've been wrong before.

No.

Ok, maybe some more info for those who aren't Porsche fanatics?
I'm just confused since the few people I know with 914s ditched the motor for something else like a Subie or something......not to put in a 911.

The 914 and 912E engine is a Type 4 case, the same as the later VW Bus 2.0 (though there are differences, not exactly the same).
The Beetle, Ghia, 356, 912 (standard), Thing, etc. Are Type 1 cases. Very different!
the 411 and 412 also used the type 4 engine.. but as stated above.. they are NOT the same as the 912 and 914 engines
Now that the technicals questions are answered, I am still really curious why someone would ponder such an endeavor.

I wonder that also. Most 914 owners swap a 911 trans into the 914 as an upgrade
I must have been the only person in the world who liked the strange pattern the 901 trans has..
I happen to like first down and the left.. with 2nd up with 1st normally is.. but then I used to drive a truck then and that transmission was set up the same way

That's the other problem. A 914 might be the only sporting car on earth with a crappier transmission than a 911.

That was kind of my question........
