With more than 330,000 miles, my son's 1998 Impreza's engine has finally given up the ghost (I don't think he replaced the timing belt and that what failed. Thus, I am looking for a good used 2.2, preferably in he Mid-Atlantic region.

I believe that is a Suzuki GT750 - 3 cyl, 2-stroke, otherwise known as the Water Buffalo. Don't ask me why, I don't know.

The single-port is one hell of an engine, but if it were a dual port not even a mere snapped timing belt could stop its reign of fury.
I wonder how much machining is needed to slap SOHC EJ25 junkyard heads on.

Three cylinder. It is a 75 Suzuki GT380. I also have a 71 T250 twin with a 73 GT250 engine.
I just pulled a 2.2 from friend's stalled project. 130k miles. Got it to run on starting ether (old old gas in tank). Located in CT.

No affiliation but there is a Subaru dismantler down the street from me, look like about an hour from you. Always have had good stuff when I needed it. PMP auto in Mertztown.
Are you sure it's dead? I thought there was no piston/valve interference, just valve to valve, but not a 100% death sentence when the belt breaks. You could try a new belt, if no go then put the new belt on the next motor.

I have not examined. Going on what my son is telling me. I figure we put in a good used engine to get him though school and we take the current engine back to my garage and assess the damage. If it is rebuildable or repairable, we shall do so.
In reply to NGTD:
Mine is the GT380, the Buffalo's little brother. The GT750 is called the Water Buffalo because it is water-cooled, all other two-strokes of the era were air-cooled.

I've read about people slapping EJ22 or EJ18 heads on EJ25 shortblocks to make a high-compression FrankenSubie and supposedly no machine work was needed at all. All they mentioned was needing to stick with the head gaskets that are made for the block, not the heads.
Sorry about the semi-half hijack, Mopar. :)
Feel like an adventure?
'97 Legacy sedan 240,000+ miles runs, drives $500
NMNA I'm 99% sure it has the sinle port 2.2. Also wheels and tires and possibly a few other spares for your son's Impreza. :)

Other engines are not panning out. What are the details of your engine and how much do you want for it?
