Call me weird (I'm used to it) but for a track toy, 1st is going to be useless for a multitude of reasons, and you may not need 5th at all, so something like a T10 or one of the "M23" transmissions (modern take on the Muncie M22) would be sweet. If you get one with a 2.2 1st gear, that is a little shorter than the Miata's 2nd, and then three closely spaced shifts up to a 1:1 top. It'll shift way better than a five or six speed trans because of the lower rotational inertia, even before figuring that closer ratios shift better because there is less speed change.
Also, they are pretty inexpensive as things go. And tough, and lightweight.

That sounds about what 9LR's Johnny's V8 monster, some kind of dog box 4speed.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Hahaha, I've gotta really work on the rolling into throttle thing!

Having a low first for the pits is nice. Otherwise, I totally agree. Most of my track hours at this point have been between 1.43:1 and 1:1 in the benzes

I've thought about that before too, but haven't found anybody to confirm the 4 spds are as good doing the 2-1 downshift as an equivalently geared 5 or 6 spd doing a 3-2 downshift. Basically, does a taller final drive make the 2-1 downshift easier, or is ita mechanical constraint within the transmission (synchros) itself?

Yep!
This one is going to be in GLTC next season - so it's going to be very, very understressed, but I like the turn it up, turn it down nature w/ the DBW throttle.
Very much looking forward to yelling numbers at you in grid. Haven't seen a V8 Miat yet, its two of my favorite things in my favorite race series though.

Whiteclaw is an excellent mixer

You may have already met me - I was in the '85 supra this year at the GLTC CMP and COTA races. You meet so many people at race weekends it's hard for me to keep it all straight. I wasn't particularly competitive, as it was just a crap-can endurance racer shoe-horned into the rule set. I guess we'll see what happens with the rules for 2024 - I'm expecting being 6.2L is going to be penalized further. I've got a lot of tweaking to do.

Lol - I've never understood drink gate-keeping or shaming. Drink what ya' like!

You made it two events I missed. But I think I remember the car, were you at AMP last year?
My current understanding with the rule set is basically anything over 4.5 liters still gets the exact same weight hit, and I'm not sure there's data to suggest they need more yet. I know there's been a couple 6.2s and even a 7.0 in the field but they haven't been dominant. I usually find these things out the same time everyone else does though.
From what I can tell, GLTC hates cars that make any power. I ran their formula on my ST4 M3 once (with the NASA 250 rwhp) and determined I'd need to add 500 pounds of ballast to it to meet the rules. How on earth do you do anything useful there with an LS Miata?
In reply to codrus (Forum Supporter) :
I'm not sure what you mean, the series this year was dominated by detuned LS's and K's w/ DBW. It's a power to weight class like any other, 12.5:1 +/-modifiers. Probably one of the most friendly to ANYTHING classes I know of, and it's easy on driveline because even a turbo 1.6 miata needs to pull power.
You're literally talking to someone who took a '85 supra from a crap can series w/ a k-series and had a four way battle w/ a b16 CRX, a K-series BRZ and a honda accord. What more do you want?! ;)

That was the previous owner/builder of the car, he's on the GRM forum as well. I picked it up from him to make sure I didn't miss all the races while I was building my LS car. As the rules sit today, I'd need to make 195whp @ 2475 w/ the modifiers. Do-able w/ DBW, but I'll probably be adding weight. I suspect the 2024 rules are going to hit the LS's - since they were dominant at most tracks.

I got the Eagle rods from 949, I also got their ring pack. Hopefully ok.
8.6 Supertech pistons. I should get all the parts together and get the motor built.
I care about weight because I hill climb. It barely matters on flat land where everyone else races. I'm not immune to the charms of displacement. Like... I have an RX7 with a smallblock in it.
200 pounds is a ten percent weight difference in our cars. It's real. But yeah. At some point I'll have to go to a bigger motor, which is when I'll turbocharge the M3.
In reply to dr_strangeland :
10% weight increase (less compared to the turbo car) for a 300% power increase balances out pretty well :)
You will likely find the throttle response a little soft at 8.6:1. I'd rather run 9.0 or 9.5 and a little less boost. If you're running 8.6, I'm assuming you're going to be boosting the hell out of it. We've done 400+ on 9:1.
This is a V8 hillclimb Miata. We don't pave our hillclimbs unless the Sierra Club makes us.

My impression is that the Carrillos are better than the Eagles (both lighter and stronger), but either is a big step up in strength from stock.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
I love that car, but I don't know if I've ever noticed that the sticker on the back says "a**hat" ?? - lol
In reply to accordionfolder :
The number 455 is not an accident either.
Would love to come run a hill in Colorado with you guys but would need a complete cage. It's on the long term to-do list.
I will be running all of the boost.
