I don't know about the US, but there was a "Brighton" package in Canada around that time that was the perfect car. It was a stripped out wagon with a 5-speed, everything you need and nothing you don't. It (like the basic Legacy) was probably the 2.2. Which isn't so bad, really.
Like I said, if you want to lower it without it looking goofy, just get the GT. Same drivetrain, lower suspension, better looking wheels and no weird cladding.
While interesting to look at, it would be far more practical to start with a GT. I do like the two-tone though.

We have an '01 Brighton. 2.2 and absolutley no options except a cd and cassette stereo. Manual windows, locks, no ac, 5 speed with a super heavy cable accuated clutch. Great car on our wet and sometimes snowy highways.

Great car. I miss my '98 with a 5-speed. Bought it from the original owner right after he put new headgaskets in the car. Drove it for 65k miles with absolutely no issues. I just put brakes, tires, gasoline, and other fluids in it and had the timing belt changed when it was due.
I got the steering pump put on a couple days ago (that was easier than I expected) and it's being inspected today. I could be driving it soon (which would be nice given the temps and the working a/c).
I have no desire to do ANYTHING to this car other than drive it. No lowering, turboing, or any of that. Appliance with a roof rack and a/c...yes please!

Aye, we got Legacy and Impreza Brightons in the States.
I recently talked a coworker into a refrigerator white '99 Legacy Brighton wagon. AWD, cable clutch(I massively prefer the feel over hydraulic) 5 speed, EJ22, A/C, cruise, PS, manual windows and locks, cloth seats, and nothing else... Perfection. Lack of tach was solved by swapping a L unit into the existing Brighton cluster, no wiring required. Rallitek adjustable rear sway bar ups the dirt road hoonability factor by 12.
I prefer it over my daily bugeye Impreza by a wide margin.
