They tried that several years ago. Wasn't terribly successful.
I don't know that there is room in the market for more than one little sports car like the Miata. Though the Barchetta wasn't sold here it didn't set the world afire and the FoMoCo Australian sourced (and Mazda based) Capri was a flop. Of course the cars being FWD kept the purists from bothering with them but Americans in particular shy away from 'impractical' cars with only two seats. Now if Fiat would come out with a 124 Coupe along the lines of the BMW 1 series...
the Fiat Barchetta was what Fiat wanted when the X 1/9 came out. A front engine, front wheel drive, "soorty" car. Instead Bertone gave them a hard core mid-engine sports car that is still able to kick ass on the track today (with mods)
While Fiat's reputation in the states is still not the best.. they are best remembered for their sports cars, not their bread and butter cars that made their European reputation. So maybe a true sports car will raise their sales here in the US above what the 500 was able to do
Give me an Abarth "124" fastback based on a Miata chassis, and you've mostly taken away the reasons for me not buying a Miata (don't want a vert, never liked the looks until the new one).
I'll be in the market for a new car in about 2-3 years, so get moving on that, Fiat. And don't make it silly or cutesy.
Kind of a skewing topic comment here but I hope that Fiat sticks around now. They are a really interesting company

Yeah wasn't the point of the 4C to be what Fiat could do for the price of a Vette?
Missed it by that much

It's made of carbon fiber, has manual steering, a dry dual clutch gearbox, and costs the same as a well optioned Corvette. Cars have gotten to be very expensive in the last few decades, but the 4C is relatively cheap for what it is.
