Ok, so in the interest of being as grassroots as we can we saved the electric fans from our subaru donor to use in the Wartburg. They are 2 different sizes.

The small one, fits fine in a pull configuration (as it was designed for) but doesnt cover the whole surface area of the new radiator.

The large one fits perfect in a pusher configuration (reverse polarity on the wiring?)

But in its correct pull configuration I would need to notch the bottom of the shroud for the return pipe (I would seal the gap with aluminum tape or RTV or ??)

Im leaning toward option 3 even though it is the most work but if anyone can think of a reason one of the others would be better I'm open to suggestion.

I think #3 would be fine. And depending on how much you trim the shroud sealing the gap won't be that critical. The rest of the core is covered. If it's a slight gap I can't see it making any measurable difference.

I'm sure either one would work fine.

The simplest solution is Option 1, given how much work you have put into everything else, maybe simple would be best for this one. Bring the big fan if it doesn't work and then you can make that mod Saturday night

Of course nothing has been simple so we decided to not make it easy on ourselves now. Actually it wasnt bad to go with option 3 and it just looks like it was meant to be there.

Now you can use fan #1 to keep the driver cool.
