Aren't the side housings cast iron? Why else would racing beat sell thousands of dollars of aluminum housings?

As a result of my automotive tunnel vision, I failed to specify front engine / rear drive applications and I was thinking mainly of four and six cylinders. Nothing else existed to me at the time that I asked the question.
Again, pretty much any Suzuki engine + proper trans from a Sami/kick/Vitara.
Some BMW 6s...
Nissan VQ V6s
Toyota GR series V6s
Ford Duratec 30 V6
Chrysler Pentastar V6s
Course, compactness is going to be up to you to determine...

The Mercruiser marine 4cyl. 224CI. Aluminum block which held half a 460 V8 and used one of the ford cast iron heads. That is OK because aftermarket alloy heads for the 460 will pop right on.
I really want to know what one of these feels like in front of a 4spd.
M90 Transmission from a 960 will allow you to use the 5 & 6 cylinders in a FR configuration, maybe the 4 cylinders too, not sure about them.

There has been at least one aluminum block / aluminum head Slant Six assembled. The aluminum block was optional for the first couple of years of production. Only a handful of the experimental aluminum heads escaped the factory. One found its way to the right guy.
F20C, if you have 4 grand.
SR20 Nissans also. If you have a lot of wide but not a lot of tall, the VW aircooled boxers, Subaru 4s and even some of the old Porsche 6s are relatively affordable.

Anyone have an idea how much an iron 5.0 weighs? The spec sheet for the Dart block says ~85lbs. Only $6,500, prepped, BTW.

is the Rochester carb stock?

Ooooh. That would be awesome in my Capri.

You lost me at "only."

The funniest part is that those motors are lighter than a Miata motor.

Funny how the V8 block is cheaper than the I4 isn't it?

I don't think the 1.6 is any lighter than the 1.8 is it?
I know the KLZE is lighter than a BP.

Market viability. I can guarantee if I had to sell both of these and only these, I would EASILY sell the 302/351 block 3 or 4 times more often then the 4 popper.
BTW, I read ALL 37 pages of the Mercruiser thread and OMG, way too much noise over piddly little E36 M3.
