Let’s not forget cold tires.  I think it happened right as he was coming out of the pit lane.  Add that to high power, quick rise/fall on that section of track, and traction control off...  not a surprising outcome.  I’m sad to admit that I’ve done it myself at a track day.

I don't get how the possibility of the electronic nannies being turned off/down makes it any better, unless it was done without the knowledge of the driver before he entered the car. There is no justifiable reason for the electronic nannies to be in anything but their most intrusive setting in this situation. And even if the electronic nannies were in full effect, a bumpy track, 750hp, and cold tires seems like a pretty thin excuse...Especially for somebody with his background. These were pace laps, not hot laps at Nurburgring. I would almost rather hear that the car had a freak mechanical failure that caused it to crash.

Oh I am sure I would have cocked that up, I have no doubt that I would have spun it into the wall. Tires smoking, me screaming like a little girl, yup it would have been ugly.

Pace laps for Indycars who need to be going fast enough to get some heat in their tires. As capable as a ZR1 is, it ain't E36 M3 compared to an Indycar. So I'm sure he needed to push pretty hard.

Pushing "pretty hard" should still be well within the confines of the ZR1's electronic nannies...Especially considering that standard model Corvettes and Camaro's can easily pace the same cars around the same course. As far as I'm aware, it's not the job (nor intention) of the pace car to get heat into the race cars tires by means of outright speed.
