In spite of the fact that I was not a big fan when they were new, I really like reading all the recent posts about 70's era AMC cars.

There's something strange about GRM, it makes me nostalgic for car that I never really liked in the first place.

Yea, that's pretty cool isn't it. I was at a u-pull-it on Sunday and saw a really clean Eagle 4x4 wagon that was a "CARS" car. Made me sad. It only had something like 42K on the odometer too. Hopefully it will get picked clean before being crushed.

This site also has me thinking of ways to carve up a Miata chassis and use the bits under other cars like I would have in a plastic model kit. Lucky for me I only have time for ideas, not to actually try them.

Oddly enough a friend called today saying he saw my old Jeep J-10 on the road today. I miss the old girl. AMC 360 FTW.

I did a quick Craigslist search (well, SearchTempest actually) , and I found a few AMC's with surprisingly low milage in my area. I think that the brand often appealed to conservative, thrifty people who didn't necessarily drive a lot. Now those people are old and their cars seem to be hitting the market.

Much like needing more cowbell, I think it's time GRM offered up some AMC goodness (or heck, in CM as necessary). There's got to be a good feature car or two out there somewhere that isn't just another AMX.

I just did the same search and found some interesting bargains.

Here a an '81 AMC Spirit version of the Gremlin. I think these are somewhat rare. At least unique.

My dad had a 67 Ambassador convertible as a toy when I was in high school / college. He really wasn't into cars, and I have no idea why he got it. I drove it far more than he did. Sat six comfortably and the top went down. It was great. He lost interest, I had no money we sold it for $100 after it sat for 3 years.

I can't give a good explanation why, but I do love me some AMC's and ramblers

I bought a '68 Javelin new. 290 V8, silver with a black vinyl top. A very pretty car. Sold it when kid#3 arrived. It was a lot of fun, and just different enough to be special.

I drove my 5spd Eagle Wagon to the GRM HQ a couple of times this week. The car is absolutely a beast. It will sit for months at a time, but always starts and runs well. I've got about a million things going on currently, but I'll try to update the Eagle's page, as there has been quite a bit of work done recently:

Some Gremlins were sold with denim interiors.

AMC was pretty funky.

AMC offered the Levis package on most of their lineup back then. I remember the Levis logo on the sides of Jeep CJ's, before they all rusted off.

AMC had lots of "designer" interiors. They made a Pierre Cardin Javelin, a Gucci Hornet, a few different Matadors, and of course the Levi's interior.

My favorite AMC ad:

"People should feel like they're sitting in a living room instead of sitting in a machine."

Pierre Cardin should be ashamed of himself.

When you don't have enough money to change the car, paint and cloth are cheap, that's why AMC did so many funky schemes.

I used to love AMC's. Does anyone remember the Marlin? Looked like a 66-67 Charger with a tapered rear window. The AMX, (only American car to come from the factory with neutral stearing) before it became just an add on like the SS from Chevy or the R/T from Dodge. Javelins were really cool and were used as cop cars in some states (NM I think). I am not sure but I believe they offered just about their entire lineup with a manual or auto.

Very Cool

Neutral steering? Never heard that one before. They are just 98" wheelbase Javelins, including identical front suspensions and steering boxes...

And yes, the Javelin was used as a cop car from 71-74, but in Alabama. Greenlight makes a 1/64th version of the 71:

The real '71 (note that they were Javelin's, not AMX's, yet they had the 401 and rear ducktail):

The '72 (notice the blue hood and spoiler):

The original AMX was not a Javelin. The Javelin came after and then got an AMX version like Camaro's SS and RS.

The original AMX was a 98" wheelbase Javelin with 2 seats. The are identical under the skin, and even most of the skin is identical. Suspensions, rear axles, brakes, engines, transmissions, bumpers, lights, glass, doors, fenders, valances, trunklids, interiors, they are all the same.

68 AMX:

68 Javelin:

Side-by-side:

And the Javelin came out first. It was released in the fall of 67 with all of the other new 68 models. The 2-seat AMX didn't come out until February of 68 at Daytona. My Grandfather bought the first one in Connecticut in March, he still owns it (390, 4-Speed, Go-Pack, Hunter Green on Tan with just over 10K original miles, never been restored, AACA Nationals Gold Winner).

Grandad's 68 AMX in the middle, my Uncle Dave's 69 on the right.

My bad, I guess I just misremembered. Was the original Javelin also aluminum bodied? I thought I read that the AMX was.
