GM did that on the F Bodys in the 90s. They used a T5 behind the 6 cylinders and the transmission was mounted at a 17 degree angle.
I recently read the build thread of an e36 guy cutting his bellhousing and rotating it to have the engine less slanted to make more room for the bottom mount turbo. Seemed to work well.
