I just discovered that HF sells a spot welder at a pretty low price ($159). Anybody tried one of these, specifically the 120v unit? It could be quite useful for panel replacement, but I'd rather not buy something that's going to quickly become a useless garage ornament.

Yeah, I've used one.  Would Recommend.  My friend bought the 120V version for a project we were working on.  Carbon steel, like 16-ish ga.  Worked great.  I tried it on 16ga 304 as an experiment and it fused it together, no problem.  Like could not split it apart.  The only thing is it pulls a LOT of juice.  If you don't have a 20+ amp circuit with nothing else on it, you'll trip the breaker.  I would occasionally trip a 20 amp breaker as it was.  If you have 220V available, I think it would be the better one to use.

Their specs for the 120vac version says it draws 13.5 amps, which is pushing it for a 15 amp circuit - I agree that it would work better on a 20 amp circuit.  The tongs on it look kind of short, assuming you're using it for automotive work if you could get longer ones they'd probably be more useful for reaching into tight spots.
