I may be working a trade for a 70 BMW 2002. I've always liked them, but I don't know them that well. Other than rusty rockers and rear shock towers, what else do I need to look out for?

http://www.bmw2002faq.com <- Bill at FM just bought one of these critters, that's where he seems to keep ending up.

Rusty everything else. More specifically, rusty front frame rails (especially the left one), floors (especially in the front corners), fenders (around the marker lights and low behind the wheels), trunk floor (around the gas tank and in the spare tire well), nose panel (look down low), and hood (leading edge). There's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Other stuff is pretty sturdy and easy to deal with. Drivetrain is pretty bulletproof. Even the electrics are decent.

I've reworked 3 of them...rusty rear subframe mounts, area behind front wheel above the rocker, wheel wells, spare tire well, door bottoms, oh wait - the short version, any sheet metal on them is vulnerable. If there are issues with the subframe mounts- it's going to have a lot of problems - it should be a deal. Replacement sheet metal can get up there - 900 for rear quarters, nearly 600 for a door (several years ago). Luckily, front fenders and rockers aren't too bad. On the interior - cracked dash, missing trim. Good luck I love the little bimmers.

Yep, rust everywhere. Definitely a car you want to use a magnet on. Interior parts can be a little pricey. Anything needed to make it go or stop is available and usually not expensive. 90% of them have had the crappy Zenith carb tossed for a Weber by now. I think they are a little ho-hum stock. They really respond to basic suspension mods (struts, lower springs, sway bars).

Bill's comment was "the world has spun around a lot of times since this was a hot car". His has a header, Webers, a 5-speed, Bilsteins and probably other toys. Cool looking, not quite up to the level we expect around here. But just wait...

Thanks for the help, but I think I'm gonna pass.

02s are one of the cars that make fiat's look rust proof. That said, they are supposedly fantastic drives in a purely vintage way. Very modern yet old at the same time
