My mom ran her old Subaru out of oil last night and the engine locked up. Now I've seen old air cooled VW engines lock up, get freed up, and still run. Any chance the EA82 can be freed and still run? I know it's probably going to have bearing damage, etc., and I'm already planning to swap the engine, but I'd like to buy a little time.

Do what the guy who bought my dad's old one-ton did:

  • Bunch of penetrating oil
  • Tow strap
  • Pull 'er out on the hwy at 100 km/h (60 mph)
  • drop the clutch in 3rd gear
  • Watch the pinion gear take out the windshield of the car behind you

Haha! I've done some stupid things with cars, but nothing that bad. I always use fifth gear.

I'm not familiar with what engine code that is, but I'm guessing its a boxer.

I wouldn't count on that engine running again. In addition to a normal engine failure, you have gravity pulling down on the pistons, I think it would be interesting to see if that would wear out the bottom of the pistons and cylinder walls worse then a I4/6 or V engine.

I mean, you could just try with a breaker bar or something?

Give it a shot! what is there to lose other than whatever you try to loosen it up? and if it does experience a resurrection maybe it uses some oil...

Sending to the bone yard or putting another engine in are gonna cost something...

you choose...

What year is it ? EA82's were made from '85-'94 ?? How much is the Subbie worth before the oil escaped ?

It's a '90 Loyale. It may not be worth fixing to a lot of people, but it's really freakin' clean, and a u-pull engine is about $100, and I can get every gasket and seal on the engine for less than $100 shipped. So I should be in it for about $250 to fix it, including oil and things that I may have forgotten. Unfortunately, I just got back from the local U-Pull yard, and last time I was there they had three of them, now they have zero. They show one in Indy, so it looks like I might have to take a day trip.

I have a carb'd EA82 in a Coupe that I have been wanting to go to a good home. It ran 2 years ago and the only reason in hasn't run is because there is no battery and I haven't had the time to replace the clutch.

Also, I'm right south of Chicago, so I'm pretty far away from you.
