I believe that the magazine had an article on rebuilding the Subaru engine that talked about this. On my phone now, so not the easiest to find.
from what ive seen the hand crank grinder is the easiest cheapest and best way to keep from removing too much material.

Let me clarify. I found the tools your supposed to use before I started the thread. I've just never used them before so I'm trying to learn how to use them. :)

Googling "gapping piston rings" will get you an infinite number of tutorials. Not much to it though, put it square in the bore, measure gap with feeler gauge, remove material, repeat until proper gap is reached, deburr, install on piston, repeat till you run out of rings.
