So I don't have a helmet yet, but will in the next few weeks.

I found a local guy who does graphics and helmet painting, etc. I gave him a call and quickly learned he is an arrogant shiny happy person.

So, since I don't want to have it done locally now, I thought I'd try to find a member here that can paint a helmet. Nothing extravagant, and I could care less if you painted a helmet for a half-baked stock car driver that I had to Google to figure out who it was.

There is a place near me called Hot Hedz Designs owned by a guy named Jason Saar that does helmets for pro MX teams. He did a buddy of mine's racing helmet as an exact replica of a Webber/Red Bull lid. It is beautiful. I'm not sure what sort of design or budget you had in mind but it's in the several hundreds of dollars for something that intricate.

Some tracks are pissy and won't pass painted helmets thru tech....(if it matters).

I am in fact in Ann Arbor, MI.

I have a couple ideas. One idea is something like this:

The other idea involves red, white and blue stripes. Nothing intricate.

What is the reasoning behind that?

Some paints can weaken the shell.

I'm thinking it's because helmet paint tends to be flammable, something you really don't want in a closed cockpit.

DIY if it is a simple pattern. I did mine with some spray paint and masking tape. I used some pinstripe tape on some edges to make them look more even. Came out pretty good, I think. Just have to sand down the shell with 300 grit to get the paint to stick. Sorry, can't post pics ATM.

No personal experience but Will Buxton had his painted by a pro that does F1 drivers helmets.

I only have a matte black HJC AR-10II so I just got a decal of my last name as a visor strip since I didn't want to spend the money on it. And I spent quite a few hours looking for cool vinyl graphics but to no avail

Re-paint can hide damage and defects. If they pass a painted (& damaged) helmet and you get hurt they don't want it to come back on the track. It is easier to say No. They told me no at Commerce years ago for too many stickers on the helmet among other infractions.

Decals are certainly an option.

Harris Decals

When the 2015s come out, I'll probably splurge for paint, but the decals work out surprisingly well.

Vynil wrap and decals are great ides! That decals site has a design very similar to what I had in mind.

DIY is a no go for me. I have zero artistic ability.

I feel your pain. Neither do I. I literally can not draw a straight line. I found that the masking tape did that for me, though. However, if I had known the decals were available I would have gone that route, too.

In all honesty, I don't know if I could put sand paper to a brand new helmet

I guess the decal set may be the way to go.

Basil- when you have time, do you mind posting an image of your helmet? Or email me a copy of the image?

Maybe it will help me find some confidence and inspiration.
