My water pump is done and my t-belt is due anyway. Going to take it on myself, but I have never done one before.

Any pointers - I have been reading my Bentley manual.

Plenty of YouTube help out there. What engine?

I did it twice on my Mk4 GTI 1.8t, pretty straightforward from what I remember (I rate myself about a 4 on a 0-10 scale of GRM members' mechanical ability).
The only issue I had, was the second time, the 8mm hex for the idler pulley got rounded off, but I was able to get it out with a cold chisel and hammer. For reference, I used Bentley plus a pictorial DIY from VW Vortex

Go with a metal impeller pump. I also changed the plastic water inlet since it's cheap, the cooling system is already drained, and it can strand you when it breaks open.

Sorry - 2.0L gasser.

Yes I am going metal impeller and I already changed the plastic water inlet earlier this winter because it was leaking.
