I'm trying to pinpoint a problem with my fiance's 2007 Hyundai Elantra. A couple months ago, the airbag light turned on, and the seat belt chime stays on even when the seat belts are buckled. She took it into the dealer, and they read the code it was putting out, which came up as a P1324. I looked up the code, and it is listed as a "Glow Relay Malfunction".

So, what the heck is a "Glow Relay"??? No, it's not a diesel, they don't have diesel Elantras here, unless hers is extra special and runs on unleaded too. The dealer said that they found dried coffee under the console all over the BCM which shorted it out, and they won't cover it under warranty. She doesn't even drink coffee! They want over $3,000 to replace that and the harness, which they said is fried too.

This dealer is a shady one anyway, and I'm thinking that they picked the code out of a hat and just want her to spend money there. They did throw some parts at it, like a seat belt buckle, seat track, and a seat cushion, and I guess the chime stopped (according to her) but they wouldn't let us keep those without paying for them either.

So... what do you guys think? Did they just pick this code off a list to sound like they know what they are talking about, or is my fiance's car secretly a diesel?

can you find an FSM for it and trace the wiring?

A "P" code indicates a powertrain-related fault code, but since you say they want to change the BCM and the issues at hand are not powertrain related I thought maybe you misheard a "P" for a "B".

B1324 would make alot more sense given the faults and their diagnosis. A quick google of "B1324 Elantra" turned this up as the first hit: http://www.justanswer.com/hyundai/4h578-hyundai-elantra-air-bag-light-on-the-car.html

The only "glowing" thing I can think of might be the O2 sensor heater, but even there I doubt it actually gets hot enough to emit light...

sounds like you should find a different dealer and see what they say

Elantras in other markets do have diesels. If the PCM is toast, it can put out all kinds of false codes.

... like the S10 pickup with a 5 speed that had a code for "transmission component slipping." In his case, it was a PCM that had been swapped from an automatic truck, but you get the idea.

Sounds like the dealer meant to put a B on the work order instead of a P. I have no clue how to fix this myself. I guess we'll try taking it to a different, less shady dealer. I looked at the area where they said coffee spilled, and there was definitely no coffee (or any other liquid for that matter) spilled there.

Oh, but they do! There's a nice little orange glow inside the wideband on my dyno. Not that I'm suggesting that's what Hyundai meant....

sign up for www.hmaservice.com and you can research bulletins, recalls, body and engine codes, repair procedures and all that stuff for FREE. You do have to use IE to see the pics, but you should be able to see what the hyundai specific meaning for that code is.
