A friend and I bought a Coates tire balancer.
When we try to calibrate it gives us an error code that tells us that it needs to spin first.
So we put a wheel on the balancer, it just spins endlessly for minutes as soon as we put the hood down (it doesn't wait for us to press the start button) and never gives a reading.
Put the hood back up to stop the wheel and try calibrate again, and it just gives the same error.
I found the manual online, but it's not really helpful in this case
. Thought I'd ask here if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.
Is there a tire on the wheel?
I ask because some balancers will not handle a relatively lightweight bare wheel alone... Needs to have some weight to it or else it throws an error thinking there's nothing on the balancer.
Not much help but the old one I used to use would start spinning once you put the hood down. I think that's normal
Any of them that I have used... hood down = spin and test. Hood up = stop
Have you tried just a wheel, or a wheel/tire combo? Sometimes it gives the error code because it senses nothing or not enough weight and assumes you haven't put anything on it.
There is also a mode that is just for spinning without testing. It's most commonly used for visually checking for bent wheels. Possible it's stuck in that mode?
We tried it with two different wheel and tire combos. Never tried it with just a bare wheel though
I mentioned how it spun automatically when I lowered the hood because there is a start button and the when following the calibration instructions they say you should have to press it, but it just seems to start spinning as soon as the hood is down. Didn't know if that meant some sort of circuit board issue on its own?
ill look to see if it may just be in a mode to spin without testing. Didn't see a reference to that in the manual, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
I don't know about the Coats, but my machine requires a 15" steel wheel and tire for calibration. It will not calibrate with an aluminum wheel.
My Bosch balance at work is calibrated by any bare steel wheel - you just have to tell it what the wheel is, it spins it, and then you add the "calibration weight" and it spins it again.
