Someone told me CF tube frames are popular in offroad racing, this idea is alien and counterintuitive to me, has anyone seen such a thing or is this guy E36 M3ting me? Can't find anything with Google (other than RC stuff)

Highly doubt it due to the failure mode of CF.

Offroad is not the place for something that shatters when it fails.

My thoughts exactly but I don't want to bias the responses too much.

I think he is E36 M3ting you. I have seen a human powered off road vehicle built of CF tubes by a university. It looked like E36 M3.

Mountain bikes use CF. That's all I've got

I think somebody is confusing CF with CM. A chrome moly tube chassis would be at home there.

that, and one does CF TUBS not tubes. In theory, the whole center section of the truck would be a CF box like structure, not a series of tubes.

So between the CF/CM or tubes/tubs thing, it's very dubious.

Tube frame chassis is steel tubing used to create a chassis.

Carbon fiber can be used for body panels and tubs such. You wouldn't make a "tube frame" chassis using carbon fiber. You could make a nice tub or superstructure using carbon fiber though - like in F1 or Fisker. Not sure how that would hold up in off-road trucks though...

uhhhh, those un-supported bent back stays look like a really bad idea, relying on the material for strength rather than the material + shape

In the offroad scene I feel a kevlar or kevlar/carbon composite frame would be better for the added energy absorption properties. Road cars are what need the super stiff carbon tubs.
