College friend in Bedford overheated their Highlander and the shop they normally use is quoting them a $6-7K figure to do water pump and head gasket. Seems a little steep to me. If anyone is in the area and can recommend a shop I will forward info to them.
City garage might be okay... they have a decent and lots of locations. This is pure heresay though. I tackle things like this myself.
I worked for a Christian Brothers location in Clear Lake, TX.
each location is independently owned, but the corporate structure and control makes sure that they're all above bar and i'd recommend any of them to a friend or family member.
I live&work in Ft Worth. there are a bunch of Christian Brothers Locations near your friend.
I work about 6 blocks outside of Bedford city limits and have for the last 17 years.
Jack's Auto Repair at 621 W Bedford Euless Road.
If my crap was broke and I had to pay for repairs, I would take it to Jack's.
Second choice would be Kenny's Automotive Service at 624 E Pipeline.
Thank you for all the suggestions!!

They could tow it to San Antonio, have me fix it, and tow it all the way back for less than 7k, but i'm not recommending that. I'll be interested to hear what some of the other quotes are, if you wouldn't mind posting back.
They decided to not go through with the repair and bought a similar year Highlander with better options for $8k. They are going to swap out any better parts/trim from their old car to the new one and then donate the old car. Not necessarily what I would have done but I think they were too far down the rabbit hole on the rebuild with the one shop to make a move/do something different. I gave her my $0.02 on how to approach it and the shop recommendations listed here.
I told her that the "new" car could do the exact same thing in the next week/month/year but she was willing to take that risk.
