What's an appropriate size header for an exterior door that has no load bearing requirement? Typically the exterior door WOULD be in a load bearing wall, but I have an application where it is not and trying to pinch pennies. This is totally the wrong forum for this sort of thing, but you guys build garages, right?
Usually 2x4's are doubled up on the sides and a 2x8 or 2x10 goes over the top. If you don't need the header - I'd think doubling up 2x4's would be sufficient. Basically your worst case is probably someone slamming the door shut or the wind blowing it open at a high rate of speed.

If it's a gable end or other non-bearing condition, you can just use (2) 2x4s laid flat, like a top plate.
Thanks, that's what I thought. Application is walling in a self-supported steel shelter.
