Oh for got to mention that unless the friend has a use for the used parts of the motor they are now just used parts and not worth all that much. It may be cheaper to actually purchase new ones when/if he needs them in the future then paying for and dealing with a 2nd core motor.

Hol' up.
Devil's Advocate says :
I built a turbo motor for you, someone else installed it, you turned up the boost, it popped, and now you want to hang me out to dry?!
Not quite. From the way I understood it, car is factory turbo. Boost was increased, factory engine popped. Had engine built, turned out to be a POS.
In reply to rslifkin :
Correct. Car is still on factory tune and turbo currently as it was going to get tuned once break in was complete. Merely has forged pistons and rods to hold more boosts for the future. His initial hope was to build a reliable 350whp 2.0T Optima. This engine didn't make it 300 miles before E36 M3ting the bed.
Is the dealer going to pay for the 2nd install? Did they do the first? I assume they are willing to give him the short block but he will have to pay for the install as they already did that once. Yes?
If Kia is going to eat a 2nd install AND pay for a short block I am completely sold on there customer service and warranty of there product!
In reply to dean1484 :
He paid for the first install out of pocket. They offered it up at a discounted hourly rate ( I want to say 90-ish an hour rather than their normal 140-ish). They got the work for their tech, he got what he thought was a built engine installed correctly by factory trained techs. It should have been a win-win.
How much can 4 forged pistons and rods be worth new?
A little googling found that Weisco are about $55 each. Eagle H beam rods are about $45 each. So unless he can get a core delivered to the dealers door that they will accept for less then $400 I would walk away from the motor that is in the car. the only issue may be is if Kia does come get it and they find the modifications they may then actually not honer the warranty.
In reply to bobzilla :
Ahh so the dealer really has not done a warranty claim replacement yet on this car yet.

he paid $1200 for them.
Ouch. .. . Me thinks he did not get such a good deal unless that came with a forged the crank.
Hay I know. Have the dealer pull the motor and he can rebuild it? A good chance to learn about motor re building. Hopefully the bottom end is ok and just the block and the head will need to only be skimmed. Hopefully they can be skimmed as I wonder if the previous builder did it.
