Howdy everybody. I've been looking at late 80s turbo AWD Audis for a little while now but before I pull the trigger, I gotta figure out just what the heck I'm looking at and how it all works together. There has to be a better place than the AudiWorld forums to find info, right? I feel bad calling 034 Motorsports to asking questions but not buy anything, and I know there are a few Quattro heads on here who can spread the knowledge

Motorgeek is a good resource for information mining.
That looks like a good call, thanks Knurled!
Audizine was my goto when I had my 1.8t but never ventured into the 5cyl forums....

Audiworld used to be my forum when I had a CGT but I think it's fallen from grace. Once you find the right forum the 5cyl folks will gleefully help you out. Also if you join Carlisle Audi Club on Facebook there are a lot of hardcore I-5 people there that can point you in the right direction.
A million years ago I belonged to the q-list. Those daily email digests were something to behold, let me tell ya.
I worked at an Audi dealer during that era... Find a 4000. Seriously...
Noddaz, I hear what you're saying. Looks like the more basic I can get, the better off I'll be. Problem is, there are 5000cs' for sale locally, but very rarely do I see a 4000, especially not an AWD. Can I throw the quattro running gear of the 5000 under a 4000?
You have plentiful 5000csq out there? Gimme gimme!
Just a bit less plentiful, one of the 5000s I was looking at was sold today. Shame too, it was cheap and it had some work done
However, there's a 3A engine and an 01E transmission for sale from separate people a few hours from me. Odd coincidence.

Yes, the 5kqt engine bolts into the 4kq chassis with some fiddling. It's been done a million times. Actually, you can probably save yourself a lot of grief by finding one that's already been done. Beyond that there are better, more modern swaps that can be done with increasing difficulty.
The 5kt is a tank of a car but is saddled with failure-prone HVAC systems, Pentosin based power steering and some models have the dreaded UFO brake system. There is a reason they are so cheap on the used market (like most over-engineered luxury autobahn burners).
The 4k chassis is in contrast far simpler, more nimble and still wonderfully over-built. The clutch and trans can easily handle the power from the turbo engine. Some parts are difficult to get these days as Audi does not support the older cars like BMW does.
After spending some time on MotorGeek, it looks like there are some ways to make the newer 20v engines and trans fit in the 4K that don't seem to time consuming. I'll look at going that route then. Thanks for the info guys!
Make this all look easy and i'll start shopping for a 90. Kthx.
The 4000 transmission is better than anything that came with a nonturbo 20V. 016 > 01A.
The pecking order for the transmission is 01A<016<01E then, right? The electronic diff locks and things concern me a bit, I'll have to get comfortable with wiring on a whole new car.
