OK, so the dream car thread got me searching Kijiji and as luck would have it I found an Audi GT with not one but two 5000 parts cars for about half challenge money.
I know really nothing about these cars other than the Ur Quattro is awesome. I'm wondering how hard (given my limited fab skills; I do however have a nice beer budget to lure helpers) it would be to build a Ur replica from a GT.
Concentrating on mechanical (the fender flairs could come at some point, but they would need to be eventually added
) is this a doable proposition for someone with limited skills? Anyone here do this? Can it be made reliable?
I'm not getting any younger, and Ur's just keep going though the roof. This may be the only way I ever own anything close. Thoughts?

A brief search on the Googles shows that this is not a swap for the fainthearted. The question then becomes is a FWD GT a reasonable facsimile for a Ur Quattro? Or is a clean 4000 (rarer then hens teeth) a better choice?
Can you tell I'm burned out at work today?

Gt quattros and fwd gts have different floor pans I believe. It would pretty much take a donor 4000 quattro along with the GT to contain costs, so easier to just have the 4000. Then add the boosts. Still miss my GT. No power but it drove great.
A 4000 Quattro would be a much better choice to start with. The Coupe GTs are pretty underwhelming to drive in my experience, and I don't know how much power that FWD trans can take if you decide to start upgrading. The GT has a different floor pan than the Quattros so an AWD swap is not easy. They are neat looking but the styling is much more interesting than the car itself IMO. They are like a more powerful, cool looking VW Fox.
This thread piqued my interest after coming across these on CL the other day:

Sorry to hear that these things kinda suck, I had visions of a challenge budget Ur Quattro replica. On the flipside of suckage, I'm just gonna leave this here because its kinda almost relevant.

Jeff have you looked at an Audi 90 Quattro? I think that they were early 90's.
From what I understand you want the 20V, not the V6.
Still pretty rare but not as rare as a 4000, plus you can yank the 20V NA and put a 20V Turbo from a 5000 in it!!!

I owned a CGT for twelve years. Loved it.
It used to be the fastest way to make one, er, fast was to install a 5000T engine. It has a few surmountable fit issues but gives great bang for the buck. Honestly, there are so many other better engines available now that you can swap in I wouldn't do anything less than a 20v. I think I've seen VW G60s and even V8s swapped in. The Audi community can give you some ideas.
I kept mine for so long because I loved the way it looked and the way it drove. I (foolishly, in retrospect) did a N/A build starting with a newer 2.3 and then adding a cam, exhaust and a few of the limited bolt-ons that were available. Made a nice factory type car that went from 110hp to probably 145-150. It was not inexpensive as there isn't much demand for 5 cylinder parts. The chassis was the most rewarding: lowered springs, 4kq front bar, Addco rear bar and Audi 90 rear disc brakes turned it into a very capable if not remarkably fast track car.
The car is gone and my web site is a bit outdated but you can read about my build here: Mongrel Motorsports My car still exists out there somewhere...last I saw it was on ebay with a blue vinyl wrap. I think it sold for less than the engine cost me to build.
