I finally got the 2003 Hummer in my driveway and I am going over what it needs. One of the big ones is that the revers lights stay on in every gear selection except for Park. Any suggestions as to what to look at / replace?
Neutral safety switch maybe?
Yes is it a hummer but it is really just a 2003 GMC truck with funny body work.
You guessed it, bad prndl switch.
That would be interesting in traffic.
Having now driven it some it is easy to drive. It is the wifes. Happy wife happy life.
Every time i see an old muscle car with the back up lights stuck on, it has a Hurst shifter in it. They don't play well with back up light switches.

it's not that the shifters don't "play well" with backup light switches, it's that the person installing the shifter couldn't be bothered to extend a couple of wires to the neutral safety switch on the shifter.
regarding the Hummer: if it's not the PRNDL switch- which is probably mounted on the side of the trans where the shifter linkage hooks up to it- then there may be a module involved, because every new vehicle has a module involved in everything and the reverse lights aren't just used for reverse lights any more..

watch someone getting into their newer car in the parking lot some time: the backup lights probably come on as soon as they hit the unlock button on their key fob and don't go off until they get in and shut the door. see it on minivans a lot.. i think it's supposed to be a warning to other vehicles to be careful driving around it, but to me it's just a signal to anyone looking for an easy carjacking/mugging target that it's time to spring into action.

Lots of newer GM products more or less have them wired to the dome light/door ajar switches.
Really goddamn annoying when you're in a crowded parking lot, see the backup lights and sit there like an idiot only to see the people get out of the car and walk away, then they shut off.

Here's a silly question...
Is the problem the back-up lights are on in every gear but Park, or that they are in when the brake lights are on?
Just asking because it is likely the brake is being held when checking the lights in every gear but park.
If it coincides with the brake lights I'd check grounds and have a close look at the trailer plug if present.
In reply to jstand:
Not silly at all, you make an excellent point.
In reply to novaderrik:
On our cars at work they love to put back up alarms in them. I had a Suburban last week that whenever the dome light was on so were the back up lights and the alarm. It seemed like every time I got out someone let me know I left it in reverse.
