I'm sure you guys have seen this, but I thought this was pretty cool.

Airbagged trailors

Super cool, just too expensive. you can buy a nice enclosed trailer for that. This thing is serving a very, niche, niche, niche, niche, market.

I mean $10k+ for an open trailer? That borders on insanity.

Now I want to build one.

I have two aluminum trailers in progress using air bags, but both much smaller than that.

I'm confident I could replicate that for a lot less.

I'm scratching my head at one of their videos showing the loading of a bronco.
I suppose if you already have one of these trailers for a seriously low car...

Pretty cool but way expensive. Sure would be nice to have.

Yea I was thinking more along the lines of replicating it. It is rather on the expensive side for and open trailer.

I wonder what they use for the swing arm pivot? Rubber bushings or some kind of bearing?

I'd look at the lowered truck guys to see what they use. You could probably just about use a kit and adapt it to a trailer.

A less expensive method would be to copy the retractable suspension they use on ice house trailers, with a winch. One example: http://hotspotoutdoors.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/406665/drop-wheel-trailer-for-fish-ho

Take that trailer chassis and graft an early COE truck cab on the front of it, install a FWD powertrain (eldorado tornado) and rock that to the races/show.

There was a recent thread on these in ADVRider, but more focusing on single axle trailers. I think several who built them were using a 3 link setup.

I must have one of these someday! I like the ice house idea. Use an electric winch to run both sides at once.

I really wish there was a good weld-up DIY for a single-axle car trailer for a light (2,500#) track car. I know some people out there have made them & love 'em. I get the point that a double-axle is better if you have a blow out, but double-axles are an automatic fail in my county - can't park them outdoors.

That ice house trailer name reminds me of the movie Vacation. What was that called, the "Wagon King Family Truckster?" Keep in mind that thread is 12 yrs old so if they're still around the prices are probably way higher. Interesting pivot idea and appears as though they're using half a leaf spring per side. Things is, if one of those cables or ratchet gives way while towing, it could all go wrong in a big way in a hurry.

In reply to Jamey_from_Legal:

Get a double axle unit and fit it with a big single axle? I think most of those single car trailers only have twin axles because it's cheaper to buy two little axles than one big one.

That was just the first example I found, there are any number of ice house trailers from other manufacturers out there that use variations on the same theme - Minnesota is lousy with them, you see them all over.

In reply to Kenny_McCormic: Thanks Kenny, I bet you're right. It's probably easier to strip the doubles off an aluminum model and bolt up a new single.

I bet it would be easy to make a very positive 'lock' mechanism in the fully up position. Like a few holes and a couple hitch pins would be one way (maybe not the best way, I admit).

I guess I would be surprised if it didn't have something like that already.
